Hi all. I covered things briefly before. Essentially After my male rat died from mycoplasma, ongoing. My older male rat Caius was left by his own. I got him another companion, Remy rat. Of course, they have been together now for nearly 5-6 months. They have their occasional tiffs. However, my older rat tended to be bossy of the other rat. All for good parts they leave each other alone. Sometimes sleeping together, sometimes bossing each other around. My older rat is around 15 months old now. His other partner rat is around 7-8 months old. Recently the younger rat Remy has become the bossy one and wont leave my older rat alone. My older rat now takes the submissive position, while the younger buck does the siding move when he tries to shove my older rat from the side. My older rat squeaks like crazy, but remains submissive. Which is unlike him. There has been no blood or bite marks, but a couple of rat balls and fur flying. Not bites or injuries. It's like the hierarchy is changing in the cage. When before my older rat used to be the boss. The issue is, that my older rat hides all the time. And at the slightest noise, that he hears coming from the other rat. he runs and hides. Its like my younger rat one minute wants to curl up with the older rat and sleep and then the next moment be aggressive towards my older rat. This behaviour has escalated the last 2 weeks. I am thinking neuter may solve the issues with the younger buck. For now, i have separated them. As i have a savic royale cage. Im hoping my older rat now feels or will feel safe come. its a shame as things were going wel before

I personally would get the younger fella a snip. It's good for many things, not just behavior wise. If you can afford it, go for it. The sooner, the better, so in a few weeks when his hormones calm down, he can be reintroduced to the older guy. They both need each other as soon as possible.

A neuter at his age should definitely help with the hormonal aggression now that he's hitting puberty. Give him time to settle post-neuter and then start re-introductions.

Yes, he is being neutered on Thursday coming up. With someone specialising in rat neuters. i have pulled the ladder up on the cage. Remy on top cage, and Caius in the bottom. They can smell and see each other but not get to each other. Remy the offending rat was constantly pushing all the toys around and my other rats igloo while Caius was in it. Caius's response is to be submissive and just bare his teeth or run and hide in a tube or his igloo hideout or another hideout. There has been no biting or blood, But Remy has become a bit like a bully pushing and shoving Caius and rubbing all over him, not letting him rest. This behaviour was non-existant around 3 weeks ago. Caius would chase away Remy as he was alpha but wouldn't bully Remy. But Remy has become a bully. They would sometimes sleep in the hammock or igloo when they wanted and have a little tiff now and again. Lately, it's constant. Caius won't do anything back. They were in the hammock together a week ago and they both fell. I have separated them for peace of mind. If I'm at work and something serious happens. i would be heartbroken. Remy is sulking as he keeps looking down into the bottom cage and cant get to Caius. Then he looks at me like, 'why can't i go down there.

Remy in the ball pit..he is such a sweet heart to me...so lets nip the aggression in the but towards his cage mate...

Since you are getting him neutered so soon after the hormones kicked in, his behaviours should subside along with the hormone levels in a few weeks if not less.

My buddy remy had the neuter today. He is relaxing in his hammock, however he is totally ignoring me..can a neutered male become deppressed? The whole idea of a neuter was to improve the quality of his life and stop cage agression

Recently my four male rats have began fighting to the point of biting eachother and drawing blood they have their appointment to all get neutered on April 8.

there is not much information regarding rat neuters in Ontario and the GTA specifically. I did tons of research and made lots of phone calls before choosing based off price, the clinics knowlege and experience with rats and google reviews from other customers.

here is a list of all the vets in the GTA that do rat neuters included is the price per rat for the neuter as well as the examination cost. these prices are before tax.
