What do you use to absorb the pee under fleece bedding?

Hey guys,

I have a double critter nation and we are currently using fleece. We were using pipi pads under the fleece, but learned it was dangerous for them, so now it's just plain fleece. What can I use to help absorb the pee and reduce the smell?
Keep in mind that my boys love to chew on fleece, so I need something safe.

Some people use uhaul blankets sewn to the fleece, or second hand thick cotton baby crib blankets
Some people use paper (but if newspaper is used make sure it has vegetable die ink - and ink will stain the fleece)

Some just use the fleece and litter boxes and replace and wash the fleece daily
You can make or buy thick fleece liners that seem to need to be replaced and cleaned weekly, if your rats are good at using their litter boxes
Some people started making cage liners with Uhaul pads sewn under the fleece layer or between two fleece layers

Others have purchased deep pans and use other types of litter

I have used newspaper as well but it needs to be changed often.
