I am a very new rat owner and am a little concerned about one of my new boys. He is almost 3 months old, and I've had him for almost 6 weeks. Recently (within the last 2 weeks) I've noticed he looks wet around his eyes, or stained somehow. I've read about porphyrin which can build up around their eyes, but in all the pictures I've seen it's looked almost blood-like and stayed relatively close to their eyeballs. I haven't come across any articles that have this kind of staining/wetness. It's interesting to me because there are clear, distinct lines. Is this something I should be concerned about? He has been acting normally, is still food-motivated and exploratory, and I haven't noticed an excessive sneezing (though again I'm quite new, so I may not know what counts as "excessive").

The first picture here is from about a month ago, with no staining. The second two are more recent. Please let me know what you think!

Woe! He looks like a little racoon haha. Maybe it’s just his fur, if it’s just his colouring it’s very unique:) His eyes seem good to me but maybe someone else has another opinion. Hope he is well!

I had a rat who was white and had a beige stripe on his back but as he got older his colour completely changed. He went from very pale to having a dark brown spot on his nose and bum and lost the stripe. In these pictures you can see the start of the spots and how much darker they got over time.

Thanks for such quick answers! Emmabee, those are neat pictures--I didn't know their colors could change like that.

And SQ that link is so helpful, thanks for sharing! It does look like that is what's happening; I've noticed his coat changing a bit, and the time lines up as it says that happens around 3 months. What a relief!

Thanks again for the help :)
