History: A month ago we adopted two young rats (standard Roan and dumbo double Rex) from questionable conditions (fed fruit loops as part of a homemade diet and were very dirty). After just a few days with us they both were looking alert and clean. A week ago I adopted a very healthy black adult female (housed with pine bedding ) who is so sweet and very healthy, with no known history of sneezing or parasites. They are in separate cages now, though I plan to join the three girls soon after the recommended introductory phase.
Now: a couple days ago I noticed our Roan girl had a couple wet sounding sneezes. Today she is lethargic and has red Porphyrin staining on her face with a red nose. I understand there are a few common causes for URI. she may have a virus she picked up from the new rat () or a bacterial infection of some sort.
Question: should I take her straight to the vet? I want to treat ASAP if bacterial, but don’t want to build antibiotic resistance if only a virus. What is the first line of treatment? She does not seem to be wheezing.
Thanks for your feedback!
