Saw the vet today with my boy Shilo for a pre-op visit - he is headed for neuter surgery. During the exam my vet noticed that Shilo has a fairly large, fat-filled umbilical hernia; he recommended closing the hernia because it could enlarge further with time and risk protrusion of important organs and tissues. Shilo is more than a year old and therefore well past the window for hernia self- repair in rats. So I plan to proceed with the surgery to spare Shilo a possible emergency in later life.
Has anyone else had an adult rat with an umbilical hernia? If so, did he/she recover well?
