So Rusty has been to the vets with Resp issues. Has been given Synulox twice a day. However dosage seems high. Vet says 1.4ml twice daily. They say he weighs 700 grams so the maths is (100mg x 0.7) divided by 50mg/ml. Does this seem right before i give him it? Its like one and a half syringes twice a day. Im awful at working this stuff out

Synulox is clavamox which isn't an a great choice for a respiratory infection as the lone antibiotic. If he doesnt improve on within 5-7 days to get different antibiotics.

As for dosing, at 700 grams, using 50 mg/ml Synulox at 20 mg/kg BID his dose should be 0.28 ml twice a day.

Whats the 20 mg/kg part? Cant see that anywhere on the box/ label. He has been on baytrill / doxy before this. His lungs are clear but he constantly is sneezing. We also have him on bisolvon power

Have you ruled out environmental causes?

20 mg/kg is the recommended effective dose because Synulox is known to cause severe diarrhea in rats at high doses. So lower and effective and if you do notice an issue get your rat on probiotics 2 hours outside of any antibiotics.

From ratguide

Caution: Loose stool/diarrhea not an uncommon side effect of this antibiotic. Use higher doses judiciously where condition warrants. In the event loose stools/diarrhea can not be controlled with probiotics contact veterinarian immediately to reduce antibiotic dose, stopping antibiotic, or switching to another antimicrobial to prevent complication of enterocolitis.

6.25 mg/lb, PO, BID 4, 12. Given over 10-14 days.

or

20 mg/kg, PO, q12hr 34, 35, 41

Dont think it’s environmental. Theres nothing new in his cage which could have caused it and we have a air purifier next to the cage.
