Hi Rat Shack Forum,

I hate to only post here when my rats have problems. I appreciate hearing any expertise on these issues because I'm just not versed in these health signs.

I recently moved my two rats and their cage into my office by a window (two weeks ago). Shortly after that, I heard a very strange high pitched chirping/whistling sound. I was certain it was a bird outside the window, because I had never heard them make any noise like that before.

The other day, it happened again while they were playing out of the cage, and just now it happened briefly as they are resting in the cage.

I know it must be Magpie, not Olive. It always happens when I'm not watching (like when Magpie is in a box during play time, or like right now when she is sleeping in a tunnel in the cage). It is always brief.

I recorded the sound just now (turn up your volume):

Is this a terrible health sign or is it a regular squeak pattern?
