After a short battle with congestive heart failure, Arthur has been gently escorted over the Rainbow Bridge. He had just turned two.

He was such a sweet boy. He's the first rat we've known who was possessive of me. He grudgingly put up with me also loving James Bean (all the rats, all the love) but was definitely my most recent heart rat. From Arthur, we've learned that, while some rats love learning tricks, they won't share those with just anyone. Arthur would only "dance" for me. My husband tried getting him to do the trick; Arthur looked back over at me as if to say, "You're seeing this, right? You see what he's asking me to do? NO. Only for you." He flatly refused, then came over to me, and danced for me.

He is survived by his buddy, James Bean, though likely not for long. James Bean is getting lumpy, so he's got an appointment next week to see if they're fatty deposits or something more concerning. He's two as well, so surgery would potentially be a risky prospect.

Rats are such wonderful little souls. They shine so brightly while they're with us, but they burn out far too fast.

💚

Awh I'm so sorry for your loss, I also lost a rattie to heart failure a year or so ago so I know how tough it is. He sounded like an angel in any case, I'm glad he had such a loving home where his personality could shine!

Im so sorry, and yes, i totally agree with your beautiful last paragraph, they do.

I'm sorry for your loss. I hope Arthur's memory will also bring about healing.

Is James Bean okay? Hope he is and will be.
James Bean misses Arthur, but he's okay. He saw the vet today about a lump, but it looks like it's probably just a fatty deposit. We'll monitor it for a month to see if there's growth. In the meantime, we are going to gradually begin the process of finding friends for him. Finding baby ratboys at a local rescue might be tricky. James Bean is too old to put through surgery kindly, so neutering is out. He's a lovely fellow, very smart, pretty laid back, and could be an excellent influence on a pair of young 'uns.

That's great news for James Bean. Does it really show that he misses him? Poor boy, so sorry for him too, hope he finds a new buddy somehow. Thanks for the reply.

The night Arthur passed, James Bean took Arthur's favourite wicker ball into the igloo with him. He keeps one of Arthur's favourite gnawing toys nearby, too. He's starting to perk up some, but you can tell every so often that he misses his buddy.

I think he'll be okay. We've had closely bonded rats in the past, where one has passed away and the other followed suit within two weeks. We've also had bonded rats who grieved their friend, then kept right on living. Hopefully we can find some compatible beanlets for him.

Sad but so adorable. I hope everything will be okay. Thanks for the replies.
