I'm having the city officials investigate due to it being an illegal pet shop with no license or tax collection number to hopefully get it shut down and the animals removed and taken to a shelter.

Those poor ratties ..... unfortunately buying them is not rescuing because the breeder will just keep breeding more rats to sell :(

It turns out feeders can kill the rest of your rats. I'm dealing with this now where I brought home two baby rats 2.5 weeks ago who have been on meds ever since whose symptoms are still present. Three of my adult rats now have labored breathing. The first started three days ago, the second yesterday and the third today. I needed top up rats for a girl who lost her cagemate and there were no rats up for adoption in my area who were young enough to introduce or the right gender.

I am considering having the babies pts because they are killing my my mischief. The thing is now that all my rats have been exposed they will likely die one by one and pts the baby rats will be in vain.

I am sorry that is happening and I hope all the rats make it.
But it has nothing to do with the babies having been sold as feeders.
Killing the babies will not help.

There are several highly contagious air born rat diseases (SDA, Sendai, etc) that are often fatal to rats. (People who visit pet stores, breeders, etc can even carry these diseases home to their rats.) Unfortunately it is a risk to bring in new rats unless they have gone through a full quarantine. http://ratguide.com/health/basics/quarantine.php

In addition to the highly contagious air born rat diseases, rats can also catch Streptococcus pneumonia from people. Last year I lost several rats and had to put all rats on antibiotics when Streptococcus pneumonia went through my colony. I even put the rats who were not showing symptoms on antibiotics because the strain of strep was killing within 24 hrs of the first symptom. I have no idea how my rats were exposed to this disease.

I hope all your ratties survive.

Please talk to lilspaz68 about medications as all the rats need to be treated aggressively with combos of antibiotics.
