The Oromoncto SPCA.
People on this forum donated money to buy a 2nd hand CN to be used for rats,
now we need to get stuff to put in it, then deliver it and set it up.

I got two of my best rats from the SPCA. Mr. Deweysaab, who was always there for me when I needed a friend (and who would sleep on my chest or under my knee when the weather was cold), and Mr. Gloversaab, who learned so many tricks and was always very eager to communicate with me.

I think the SPCA is a really great organization.

My only concern is that the girl rats might get stuck in with the boys (or vice versa) when it's time to clean the cage sections.

I will set the two sections up so they look different - for example, the balcony can be on different sides of the cage.
I am sure the staff only remove one sex at a time from the cage and are very careful.
They could label the outside of the cage sections as boys or girls. I can mention that to them.

The staff will likely put the rats in a carrier while they clean the cage and then put them back before starting the next section. Not all shelter staff will be very familiar or comfortable with rats but they will not put males and females together, regardless of the species. The intake staff at the shelter I volunteer at do a pretty good job of sexing and separating rats as they come in, even though some of them are really not fond of them.

Wish list for 2 seperated sections of CN ..... so these poor rats living their lives at the shelter will have things
and so the SPCA and potential adopters will know what is good for rats (4 girls and 5 boys still need homes :( )
Items or money toward the purchase of items would be very much appreciated.
(Any donations of money can be sent to Jorats)

June 30, 2012

I finished setting up the CN cage for the rats at the Oromocto SPCA.
The rat shack members have done a wonderful thing by making this possible!!

1. These poor little ratties will now have good homes while they wait to be adopted.
The ratties were very happy and excited.
They were outgoing, curious and actively explored all the new things in their new homes.

2. The SPCA staff are pleased with the cage. Since the double CN is tall,
it takes up less space then two smaller cages and is easily moved since it is on wheels.
The CN setup may help the ratties find good homes as people will be more likely to see them as pets.

3. The CN set up will show new rat owners that ratties need things such as wheels, tubes, hideaways, litter boxes, and hammocks.

The CN stickers were no longer on the cage so I replaced them with two small laminated papers
They say:
Critter Nation
for pet rats
placed by members of the Rat Shack
http://www.ratshackforum.com/forum

.... to tell people that it is a Critter Nation cage
and to let people know the address of the ratshack in case they have questions about rat care.

Each cage section has a water dish and a water bottle
The Critter Space Pods do not need to be removed to be cleaned, and are attached with hooks.
Any items they decide not to use (such as the chew logs?) will be returned to me so they can be used for other rats.
