Hi everyone. So my rat Kiri was put on Baytril for a suspected uri a few days ago. 0.18 ml to be exact. At first it seemed to be helping, she started getting her appetite back, drinking on her own, her breathing seemed better and just all around she started seeming stronger. However the pops persisted off and on, and lately have progressed into wheezing like she had in the beggining however this time far worse. I don't know what to do at this point. I'm really scared for her. I do plan to get in touch with my vet, but I don't really know what to ask him for.

Do you think a combination of doxy and baytril could help her? Ugh my poor sweet baby I hate seeing her miserable like this.

(As you can see despite her wheezing she still interacts with her sister Navi, and is even moving about still. Is it possible for the baytril to help with her lethargy but not be helping the congestion? :( )

    baytril + doxy may help
baytril + azithromycin (10 mg/Ib - sold in pharmacies by prescription from vet or Dr) twice a day, may help
see ratguide.com for info - you can type in the meds and also search for breathing

Hopefully you contacted your vet and she has an appointment
When rats are ill they die fast so it is important to get vet care asap

Amount of meds is based on the weight of the rat and the strength of the med (mg/ml) so if you know her weight etc lilspaz68 can check the dose

You may want to change you title to indicate that you have a very sick rattie

Yeah, I rushed her to our vet as soon as I could get her in, as she wasn't eating or drinking at all, and wouldn't even leave her hammock. She's honestly tiny, she only weighed in at 280g. Since she started the baytril she's started eating and moving again, so I've been trying to fatten her up. If anyone can recommend any good foods for that in the meantime, I would really appreciate it, and I'll update you all when I pick up the doxy tomorrow.

I'll double-check your dosages once you have the doxy. I have the weight of your girl but still need concentration (mg/ml) of the antibiotics and the dose you are being told to give

Okay. So she's been on 25mg/ml Baytril. And I was told to give her 0.18 ml twice daily. And as for the doxy, 5mg and 0.3 ml twice daily. Anything off with the dosage? This is my first time treating this sort of thing so I really appreciate your help. vuv

Awesome. Thank you for confirming with me. One thing I wanted to confirm though, is it safe to give them both around the same time? Or should there be some kind of time window between them both?

Thanks so much, and I will keep you all updated on how she's doing. :)

In addition to her usual diet, you can feed her foods that are easier to eat and contain fluids for hydration
    for example:
the rat blocks soaked in cool water to make mush
organic soy infant formula thickened with a bit of baby cereal
cooked sweet potato, cooked squash, mixed greens, baby kale, broccoli
cooked whole grains such as organic oatmeal or quinoa

    Thank you both so much.

Sorry I haven't posted an update sooner, life got off and on busy for a bit there. But I am pleased to let you all know little Kiri is feeling so much better. She's put weight on again, is eating and drinking regularly, moving about, and just all around seems like she's back to her old self again. :) (Thankfully she's also more willing to take her medicine too. LOL)

Here's a photo of her and her sister Navi snuggling a day or so after I started her on the doxy, and I will try to get some more photos and properly introduce them on here. vuv
