Here are a few cage calculators, it will help you gauge better on how many rats your cage can hold comfortably house. You should always allow 2 cubic feet per rat... more is always better.

One from the Ratty Corner. You can even select already preset cages:

This one includes shelves as well thus making use of the dead space:

Another one with cage presets:

This one will calculate as much as 2.5 cubic feet per rat. :D

i have never liked that RatzRus calculator...it doesn't ask for height, you'd think they would've fixed it by now.
It says the FN 142 can hold 6-7 rats.

yes i jut ran my dimensions through there and without the height asked it says my cat cage can only hold 7-8... which is rather stupid as my cage is compariable to the FN and is 4 feet tall... its a rather useless calculator without asking for height of the cage really...

Silly question, but |I have always "assumed" the space per rat is for adults which is all I have ever had, can they get away with less while they are young? I have 2 FNs for my brats but am going to pick up some 5wk olds and as they are eventually going to join the other girls in the FN would prefer not to have to go buy a cage specifically for them. Any information you guys can offer me about this?

Babies are very active and need a lot of space.
They need cages that are quite large ... the bigger the better ... hamster cages are much too small.
Many people cover large cages with mesh so that babies can not get out.

would never put them in hamster cages, but I have a large parrot cage (shelves, wheel, hammocks) that used to be part of a DIY habitrail system for the brats, and if the bars are small enough was going to put them in there for now, at least til I figure out something else. Figure it is better than the 15 gal aquarium the 6 of them were living in.
