My rat kirby (1yr4mo) has deteriorated quickly over the course of a week ): shes showing a lot of the symptoms of a pt
I do have a vet appointment booked for tomorrow but my vets arent really too knowledgable in rats :/ Ive been looking up medications to give and cabergoline looks to be the best option if i can afford it? kirby has struggled with sinus problems her whole life yet her lungs always sounded clear when the vet would listen to them
Shes been on zithromax on and off for a long time, and shes actually on it right now.
Im a bit confused about medications to give and if she should be taken off this with the new pt medication
what do you think is the best medication combination for pt?
do i need to take her off zithro?

Kirby is a bit young … are you sure it is not an inner ear infection?
The treatment for an inner ear infection is an antibiotic (like baytril or clavamox) + a steroid such as prednisone or dexamethasone http://ratguide.com/health/auricle_ear/otitis_media_otitis_interna_labyrinthitis.php

The treatment for pt is an antibiotic like baytril + a steroid such as prednisone or dexamethasone
and if Kirby has the most common type of pt (often found in unsprayed girls and only way to tell is to try the med and see if it helps), then also add cabergoline or bromocriptine ……. cabergoline is more effective, easier for rats to tolerate (fewer side effects) and only given every 3 days

Please post some videos on here of Kirby eating something small - can she hold it in two paws and eat it, also of her moving around - post the videos to youtube and them post the links on here.
Also please describe the symptoms and changes you are seeing

Very sorry this is happening. Hope this info helps and that Kirby responds to the meds
How much the meds help will depend on the type of pt and how fast it is growing
But I have had rats that have had as much as 6 more months or more of good quality time, as well as some with fast growing pt that meds did not help.
Good luck to both of you

Are you able to get a video or at least pics and a description of her symptoms, some of us old time rescuers would probably be able to recognize things better if you do.
