Hello, my rat Zues how is a male hooded rat I got him and his brother at a rat rescue in Seattle back on April, they arnt sure how old they are but thought they were around a year old, Zeus has been making a very loud long screeching noise all last night and into the morning, I took him to the vet but she didn't even really know what was wrong with him, she thought maybe he was having sesures or is making that noise because he is having some pain inside of him. he was smashing around his cage all night making that noise so loud it woke me up when i went to look at him he was thrashing around the cage and was hitting the walls and making noise. The vet gave him some pain medication so he has calmed down and hasn't made the noise since about 9 this morning. He quit making that noise around the time we took him to the vet. He is in a seperate cage from his brother and the vet said she would call a specialist to see what she thought and she would call us, she hasn't yet and I'm still worried about him still don't know what's wrong with him. Does anyone have any thoughts about what's going on? I really need some input.

I'm sure liszpaz62, hopefloats, or jorats can help you if you pm them! You if you don't get a response soon try reposting under ER that might catch someone's attention faster. Sorry I cannot help you - hope your baby gets better.

Are you able to take a video of your poor boy so we can see his breathing and how he is acting?

There's a few things it could be...when a rat has a respiratory illness and feel tehy cannot breathe, they will run panicked in their cage, bashing into things. Can you rat phone your little man and tell us what you hear? Rat phoning is when you pick up your rat in 2 hands, and hold his side (where his lungs are) to your ear and listen for any sounds (crackles, gurgles, whines, wheezing)...check both sides.

He could be having seizures...they flop around and toss themselves about during bad seizures then once it stops they get very quiet and dopey for some time while recovering.

he could have pain, but a rat crying out in pain is not that common, especially continuously. The pain meds are likely making him feel a little better but are now masking his symptoms.

I'll wait til you tell me what his lungs sound like then we'll go on from there okay?

He is sniffing around as I do this and I'm not really sure what its supposed to sound like as I do this, it seems normal but I'm not sure. I can video tap him but how do I post it on here? And thank you so much for the help.

Do you have a video/photo hosting website? Just put the link in here. I can edit it as a Moderator for you. :)

No I don't! I'm very new to this website I found it very late last night while trying to search for help for my little guy.

Crackling is a respiratory issue, so your rat needs antibiotics it sounds like. I wish I could see his breathing but you would need a site to link from like photobucket, or youtube. Can you create an account on Photobucket or on Youtube and upload a video? I assume you will take the video on your camera?

When did he get the metacam? Did he act this quiet after the metacam or even before?

You are a perceptive mom, something IS wrong. In the beginning of the video, you can see him circling, trying to get comfortable...he hurts somewhere I think. The ears twitching like that means he's tense...is that normal for him as well?

He calmed down this morning around 7 am he woke me up around 4:30 freaking out and I stayed up with him till it was time to go to the vet at 9, on the car ride over to the vet he wasn't making any noises or anything he was just dragging himself around in the cage and kept circling and laying down, when we got to the vet he made on last little peep and he has been silent since then. And no it's not normal for him to twitch his ears like that.

The vet checked his tail, his mouth, his paws, checked for lumps, checked his heart and lungs, and checked his ears.

Well they missed the mild crackling (not impressed)

You said he cried when you pick him up...can you see if there's blood in his urine or its very strong smelling? I feel its his abdomen that hurts and UTI's do hurt. You could put him in a small carrier on his own with light coloured fabric or even white paper towels in the bottom and wait for him to pee.

Okay he has been in a small cage all day and he hasn't left my side, so ill switch out his fabric that he has right now for some white paper towels.

Let me know what happens in the morning. Poor lad, he looks so uncomfortable :(
