Hi all,

My big boy BB has had nasal congestion since we moved from the city to the countryside. His nasal breathing is very noisy, but his lungs are clear (vet checked, although it wasn't an exotics specialist), he is eating well, grooming and seems very healthy. It's just he has nasal mucus and gets porphyrin out his nose.

I'm unable to get to a vet atm, and am in the UK, so can anyone recommend an antihistamine I could try on him? Benadryl here in the UK isn't the same as the US one so I'm not sure what I can try (cetirizine? Loratidine?)

Thanks very much 😊

Cetirizine can work. It is an antihistamine to relieve allergy symptoms such as runny or congested nose, itchy and water eyes, itchy cough and sneezing too.

Yeah, I'm an ex pharmacy tech so I know cetirizine, am taking it myself actually!!! I just wasn't sure what I can safely use on a rat, so thanks. Any guidance on dose? TIA.

I’m wanting to try some Certirizine with one of my boys too, but am also in need of some help re dosage please...? Thank you 😊

Hi,

I gave BB 0.1ml twice a day to start with, then upped it to 0.3ml, but it didn't seem to make any difference for him. I bought a 1ml oral syringe from eBay.

Thanks very much; I have a tiny syringe so I might try him on 0.1ml and see if it makes any difference. He’s only ten weeks old so weighs 150g; would you know if your rat is much heavier than this please? Thank you 😊
