So, this is my story

My baby boy (about 3-4 months) have been sneezing for a month now since I brought him home. His cagemate is very healthy till now (thanks God :)). The first 1 week I thought it just a new home sneezing, so I am not worried. But on the 8th day, he is still sneezing, and I rushly brought him to vet. The vet says he is okay and just give him a vitamin to boost his immune system. The vet says he is going to be okay in a week. But in one week, he hasnt recover, but worsen (sneeze 3-4 times in a min and the sneezing is wet and squeaking noise every time he wakes up). After consulting to the vet, the vet ask me to try steam with some eucalyptus oil drops (in Indonesia, they believe eucalyptus oil can help reducing cold and many other disease :D). But I read the aromatic compound is bad for rats, so I excluded the oil snd just giving steam. But unfortunately it doesnt got better. I consult again through phone, but she says she is not available till the next week. So I decided to go to another vet.
The second vet, give amoxicillin, and she says my boy going to be okay in a week (i read a lot, cmiiy amox have to be given longer) and I say it to the vet, but she says to come back again if in a week he ie not recover. After giving it in a week, there are a little bit improvement (not significant though), he still has squeaking noise every time he awakes. I was going to go to the vet again and consult, but after calling her, no one picked up, then I go to her house the next day, but no one there :(

So at last, I consulted with my friend who is going to be a vet, says that amox cant cure myco, and she suggest me to try zithromax. Unfortunately, I cant buy it here without presc, so she sugget me to try doxy first. For the first 3 days, doxy works really fast, almost no sneezing heard in a day. But in the 6th day till now (11th) he is starting to sneeze again (sometimes wet sometimes dry), start squeaking when he wakes up too.

The only symptoms are wet sneezing and squeaking every time he wokes up, and in a last 2 days he seems to stretch a lot. He eats a lot (i giave them 3 times a day), and when both of them up to my shoulder, I can only hear Lucky breathing noise, it sounds clear but very loud. Their cage is big enough (80x60x90), old clothes bedding, i dont use any perfume too, and my room i cleaned it every day to prevnt dust. I change the bedding twice a day (only the one which has pee on it)

What should I do now? Should I continue using doxy?or stop giving ab? Or add another ab?

I also need a suggestion on diet, because in Indo they don’t have any rat blocks and I try to buy in amazon, but unfortunately they dont ship to here. Now i am giving them a mixture of oatmeal and baby food plus fresh veggies.

Hi! I'm so sorry your little guy is not feeling well. I would ask the vet for Enrofloxacin. That is really the best medication for respiratory infections. But he needs to be on it for at least 4 weeks.

Amoxi us good for secondary infections

As Jorats said he needs baytril and if that doesn't help enough, then try baytril (Enrofloxacin) + doxy or baytril (Enrofloxacin) + azithromycin (10 mg/Ib) orally, twice a day. If antibiotics ae working then he will need to be on them for at least 4 weeks to 6 weeks. I get azithromycin from a pharmacy by prescription from my vet, don't know how it works where you are.
If antibiotics don't start to work within 3 to 4 days then you need to get a different antibiotic or combo of antibiotics. Rats get sick and die fast so you do not have time to wait a week as suggested by the vet.

If you want help with how much to give or to double check what was prescribed, post his weight, te type of med, the strength of the med in mg/ml, and amount he is getting

I hope he is soon feeling better

(might be a good idea to start a different thread asking about diet and just talk about his illness and treatment here)

Hello, I finally stop the doxy treatment as he is not getting better, I will bring him to the animal clinic to ask for enrofloxacin. Hoping the trip wont stressed him out

Thanks for the suggestion jorats and SQ. I really appreciate it
