My rat suddenly has a descent size squishy lump near his chin/cheek. It almost looks like he has food stored in there but he doesn’t. It was not there the day before! The other night I noticed he was limping a bit but it was so minor I just thought he knocked himself a bit - now I’m wondering if he maybe fell and it’s swollen now and maybe that’s why he was limping. His energy is good and he’s eating no problem - I checked his teeth and they look fine. He takes doxy 0.2 twice daily and he’s on a diet so he’s lost some weight. He’s 2 years old. Maybe he got stung or bit by a bug? Maybe it’s an allergic reaction - I gave him a grape the other night but now I’m worried maybe it didn’t agree with him. Let me know what you think! I’ll take him to the vet if it doesn’t get better soon. Maybe it’s an abscess or a tumour he is somewhat old. Here are some pictures.

Try this first. Try massaging and/or using a damp hot compress on the tiny lump. See if it disappears within a day. The location could be a blocked salivary gland and this method helps open it up so it drains. If it doesn't work it could be a small abscess. The damp hot compress should bring it to the surface allowing it to open up and drain. Once it's open you can flush the cavity with warm saline twice a day til it heals

Thank you for the advice! It has been 2 or 3 days now and it looks like it might be getting a bit smaller. Maybe I am wrong. I will put a hot compress and see how it goes. If it doesn’t change I’ll take him. It would be a very strange spot to have a tumour form. Hopefully it is not that.
