Lucy, the beloved pet rat of a Sydney homeless man, has been found safe and sound after being stolen from her CBD post.

Lucy went missing from outside Footlocker on Pitt Street when her owner Chris left briefly to use the bathroom on Saturday last week.

It prompted a city-wide search to find the rat, whom Chris had described as a member of his family.

Thankfully, the search has come to a successful end.

NSW Police announced on Thursday the animal had been retrieved after she was picked up by a woman who they say believed the rat "had been abandoned".

"A woman, who walked past and saw Lucy alone, believed she had been abandoned, so took her home and cared for her," NSW Police said.

"Thanks to all our Facebook followers, Lucy was safely retrieved today and returned to her owner."

An NSW Police spokesperson said officers attended a home as part of their inquiries and retrieved Lucy.

A video of the pair being reunited was also shared to social media.

"Come here baby, let me look at you," Chris can be heard saying as he picks Lucy up from a box.

"Yep that's her."

Chris thanked officers and the public for their efforts, sharing plenty of kisses with his much-missed pet.

There was an outpouring of support on social media last week after a photo of Chris was shared online.

Notably distressed, he was seen sitting on a milk crate with a handwritten sign: 'My pet rat Lucy was stolen on Saturday. Lucy is black and white with a bit of brown.'

On Monday, police released CCTV images of a woman they believed had taken Lucy.
