Bacon is a 10 month old double rex seal point siamese and she's got something going on with her eye. I noticed her left eye was red and swollen a couple of days ago. It hasn't really gotten any worse, except when she scratches it (I'm gonna say that means it's also itchy), but it also hasn't gotten any better. Her mischief-mates are perfectly well and aren't showing any of the same symptoms. I've attached some pictures if anyone wants to look and see if they know what I'm dealing with. I will go to the vet if necessary. I've had the same vet since I was 14 and she's great with rats, but she's also very expensive. Just wondering if there's something here at home I can try first or if it's an emergency that needs to be taken care of promptly. (Sorry for the picture quality. You know rats, always in motion. I wanted to highlight the difference between her two eyes, as well as the way her swollen eye is partially closed sometimes (not all the time)).

That looks like some sort of inflammation from behind the eye. Maybe she was scratched? You DO need to go to the vet, I know it's expensive. Eyes are tricky and she looks very uncomfortable. I know just how expensive it can be and I empathize but there's really nothing you can do at home because you don't know how she got this or what it is. It could be as simple as a minor scratch that just requires some moisturization of the eye and it could be much more serious.

Thank you for taking the time to look and give an answer. Like I said, I will go to the vet if that's what's needed. The last thing I want is for her to be in pain. I'll call tomorrow and keep this post updated for anyone's future reference.

`Yes, we are very interested in what it turns out to be. In the mean time Eye Infections – Rat Guide

Doc prescribed Baytril and some antibiotic eye drops. She thinks it may be mycoplasmosis, but we're starting here. If Bacon doesn't seem to get any better or exhibits any other symptoms, next step is x-ray to check out her guts.

It's getting colder so she slept in my hood on the way there and back (backwards zip-up hoodies ftw) and apparently when the doctor was cleaning up her eyes with a warm gauze pad, she leaned into it and acted like it was the best. So spa days for Bacon is a thing now, is what I'm hearing.
