Is food coloring safe?

Hello everyone, so with coming christmas i wanted to do a gift for my neighbor rats. I am planing to do some kind of chew toy, i do have these wood snowflakes they are plain wood and i wanted to make them a bit more colourful. Would it be ok to use food coloring on them? If no, than what could be safe to use?

I would say yes. I use food coloring to mark new rats that look identical, and also for pawprint paintings.
