I took in a little lady 2 weeks ago who was being given up by her owner and yup, as the title says, she has given birth. I am TOTALLY new to this and a little worried. I’ve done as much reading as I can and I just wanted to double check I’m doing this ok….
The facts;
I was told she is 4months old roughly (possibly a little more)
She gave birth 3 days ago
12 babies
All babies have the white patch - I’ve read this means they have milk in their belly?
I have modified the cage so that the bars are covered from the inside and they cannot get injured or escape.
I have back 2 nature bedding and torn toilet to issue for her nest (which is a large plastic igloo).
she seems very attentive to her babies and she is eating well herself.
my understandin is that I leave her to it and keep an eye from a distance?
I give her some boiled egg every day now on top of the usual stuff I give her . I always feed my rats a variety but I’m trying to increase the protein- is this correct?
this is all very overwhelming. I am thinking about how best to handle 12 new rats. I can cope with keeping 2 females and 2 males but beyond that I am going to need to rehome.
when should I start handling them?
