My rats get along fairly well, so I was baffled to come home today to see the worst injuries I've ever seen as a rat owner. They're all getting along right now so I can't guess who the culprit is, but I'm keeping a very close eye on them and I'm extremely concerned... they've all been together a year and there's been no injuries prior to this.

One, ear is terrible but can be dealt with.

I am concerned about the eye. Nerves (the rat) doesn't show any symptoms of pain. In fact he was super active. I'm wondering what this is. Pupil is definitely lighter on the injured side.

That last pic, when you look down on his eyes from above does anything stick out at all?

@lilspaz68 when I check his eyes from above, they're the same shape/size, just seems one is a lot paler than the other.

i wonder if it could be cataracts...

If it is cataracts, he may have just hurt his ear on something because he was unaware something sharp was there.

Cataracts are usually a silver disk that starts over the pupil. His looks too low and probably is trauma. I think watch and wait is best here.

Although cataracts and a sharp edge lines up so neatly I considered it for a moment, I simply don't think there's anything sharp enough in the cage to cause that amount of damage.

His ear has healed, but to me there's a kind of dappled appearance to his eye, like certain parts are whiter. It's the same size as the other and he has no trouble closing it + no other symptoms.

Even a toe nail can scratch the eye by mistake. If it starts to look dry just use some lubricating eye drops from the drug store.

Thank you very much for your comments lilspaz, they've really been helpful.

It's been awhile now and nothing is particular about the eye except the paleness so I think it's just eye trauma he's going to have to deal with. I'm glad it isn't worse than this though, I was severely worried at the time.
