Katiejane, it won't hurt to use a bowl as well then. I may add one for the girls too, just in case.

Have you tried the ones the attach to the side of the cage?
They still need to be cleaned frequently but I find they are less likely to accumulate bedding .... my rats love perching on them and scooping up water.
