I think one of my girls has mites. I’ve quarantined her and picked up a tube of durvet brand ivermectin. I’m just making sure this is the correct stuff and I’m not giving them anything that could poison my babies. If it is, should I feed it to them or rub it on their backs? I’m not very educated in this area. I’m just trying to help out my girls

Please do not quarantine her, mites are in the environment and if one has them then all the rats have them even if they are not showing symptoms - and all the rats will need to be treated.
Separating her from her friends will stress her, and stress makes rats ill.
Please put her back with her friends.

Hopefully someone experienced in using ivermectin will reply.
Revolution/Selamectin is recommended as it is safer, and it is easier to use since it is given once instead of weekly
Here is some info on ivermectin http://ratguide.com/meds/anti-infectives/ivermectin.php

good luck

I’ll put her back with her sisters, I was just unsure of what to do as I’m a first time rat owner. To acquire Revolution I’d have to take her to a vet and have them examine her, preform a skin scrape etc etc to just get the meds. I’d much rather skip the cost if there are easier and more cost effective methods

If the vet does a skin scraping on a rat, then your vet needs to learn more about rats, and you might want to see if you can find a more knowledgeable rat vet.

Building up a good professional relationship with a good vet who has the knowledge and experience to treat rats is essential. Rats become ill and die fast so having a good vet is essential.

good luck

Im by no means a all knowing pet owner, but www.ratguide.com/meds(the put invermectin in the search). And it willgive you exact dosing(it is super small, and has to be done multiple times).
Ive gone through this same thing and when the mites didnt go away after a 3 week dosing(once a week for 3 weeks). I went on walmart.com and bought "stronghold for kittens" (its the same as revolution, same company. Same ingredients). And voila mites gone. Good luck
P.S. stronghold was only like $20 to $30

Honestly I've always had excellent results with diametaceous earth. Just make sure not to let them inhale the dust.

If you check the link I provided above from the ratguide about ivermectin, it does give dosage info, as well as a great deal of important information. Lilspaz68 can also give you exact info on how to dose your rats with it

Diametaceous earth is dangerous to use with rats because it is very harmful when inhaled.

Medications from pet stores etc are dangerous to use and often kill pets. It is important to stick with proper medication from a pharmacy, a vet, and some people do use online pharmacies that they believe are reliable (many are not - info available on the problems re quality of meds if you do some research). Ivermectin is also given to rats to get rid of parasities such as mites so I am not referring to it.

A good place to find medical information as well as information is ratguide.com This is a vet approved medical site for rat owners.
