I’m adopting two adorable babies from an oops litter in the next couple of weeks and I’m wondering if anyone knows what color they are? I’ve never seen this grey and black patterning before on their heads and I haven’t been able to find a matching color on the AFRMA website. I honestly don’t care what they look like I just want to love them but I’m curious if anyone has seen this before. Mom is a grey capped and dad is a self black Rex. They are the cutest little beans and I can’t wait to take them home 😍 Let me know what you think!

Ooh, beautiful lovelies! Those are merle babies! Their patches may become more or less defined as they age, but they're gorgeous. Rats tend to darken as they lose their baby coats (usually by 8-10 months, but sometimes up until 1 year), so the patterns may become more blended over time. Here's a couple of photos my own rats, both of whom have/had merle patterns (first is mink merle [?] but only shows it on her butt; second is a pearl merle). I believe there are other names for it as well, but I'm not 100% certain due to some inconsistencies/localizations in rat colour names (I tend to go by AFRMA's). You can find some other merle examples over on AFRMA's website.

Awesome thank you!! I’m so excited to see them in person and watch them grow into their coats 😍

Honestly that's one of the best aspects of getting young ones (I personally have a draw to adopting older rats, but when I do get babies, I love taking pics and then looking back on them a year later to see how the coats [and size!] changed). Best of luck with them!

I picked them up today and they’re marten!! They’re so adorable and I’m already in love with them 😍 I’ve named them Peaches and Raspberry for their perfect red eyes 😍

Nice to see pictures of your adorable babies. Congratulations. How old are they?

Great. So happy for you. How are your interactions with them?:)
Thanks for the reply.
Great! They’re the most outgoing babies I’ve ever had and are already climbing out onto my hands and lap! They love treats and while they still get spooked by fast movements they’re getting used to my voice and being around me 😄
