Ask the vet for a dexamethasone injection, this will act fast and last longer than prednisone to bridge the gap.
Where are you located?

We're in Kitchener. Our vet excellent, though she's not an exotics specialist. I'm waiting to hear from her as we speak, and will definitely pass along your recommendation. She may have to call the OVC for dosing info.

We're going to ask about being put on the OVC's cancellation list. Our vet is unwilling to possibly do harm by administering medication she's not used before (and without a clear diagnosis). Raven's chronic respiratory problem, which has not responded to medication, is also a factor. Rather than accidentally give her something that could make things worse, she's suggested we continue with palliative care for now and just try to get in to Guelph as soon as they have an opening.

It's frustrating, but I understand her reasoning.

When Murdock had a PT, she saw him on the 11th and prescribed steroids while waiting to hear back from the OVC. On the 15th, they replied to her. On the 16th, he passed away at home. I can pass your info on to our vet, but until it's confirmed by an exotics specialist, she's about as likely to act on it as most of us are when given medical advice by strangers on the internet. (I know you know your stuff, but she has no idea who you are.)

Hello !!! I've recently started my 1.6 year old baby girl on Cabergoline for P.T. I know this is an older thread but hopefully someone will find this info useful in the future. I have had great success dissolving half a pill in about .2 mls of earth own chocolate oat shake and mixing in .2ml of strawberry ensure milkshake. I give it to her in a syringe where she is not eating alot and I want her to get it all. But not only does she tolerate it, it seems she actually enjoys it !!! Hope this helps

Cabergoline is that a prescription? I cant get into the vet until thursday. I thought she was dying and i had a little meloxicam left from her surgery and i gave it to her and it seemed to help her and she isnt doing well but she is better then she was. I am assuming since it is an anti inflammatory that it helped a little. I am wondering if there is anything over the counter I can give her to help, until i can get her to the vet. Maybe ibuprofen will help idk. The vet that has done all there surgeries wont be in the office until thursday so im kinda in a bind

Good morning,
Yes, cabergoline is a prescription for rats with pituitary tumors. My rat Trixie had a pituitary tumor that progressed rapidly and over a couple day she went from relatively normal (slight balance issues) to almost completely paralyzed, defecating on herself, unable to eat ir drink (mouth paralysis) swimming around with her arms and completely unaware or her surroundings. Within 12 hours of giving her Cabergoline she was trying to walk and within 36 hours she was eating and drinking by herself, walking, grooming and aware of her surroundings. From what I read it only works for 1 of the 2 types of pituitary tumors. But the type it does work for is the most common at 60 % of cases. May I ask what type of symptoms your ratty is showing ?

Also, what were her surgeries for and how long ago were they? Could she have an infection and possibly need antibiotics ?

Hey!! Sounds like what you said, at first she kinda lost the use of her hands, she was still able to walk just not able to pick things up and eat, she kinda seemed out of it, one day she was laying completely flat she cld still move but not able to walk with her feet up she was like wabbling around, i gave her some meloxicam I had left over and then she started to get up and walk she was just struggling, i been feeding her myself and making sure she is able to eat something, I am now out of the meloxicam. She does seem to be doing better then she was but i cant get into the vet until thursday. She just pretty much went from being a great happy girl to a really sick girl over night

How frequently do you give the Cabergoline and what dose are the pills that you’re cutting in half? Thanks for sharing your advice!

Hi, I am very sorry this is happening..
Your girlneeds to be put on oral baytril plus either prednisone or dexamethasone ……she will need to be on them the remainder of her life. The steroid (pred or dex) is to reduce the inflammation and hopefully reduce the symptoms. This will give her some more good quality time depending on how fast the tumor is growing.
The most common type of pt will also respond to cabergoline and bromocriptine. Cabergoline is more expensive but only given every 72 hours (amount is based on weight and is often half a pill), is more effective and rats can tolerate the side effects better.

Here is some vet approved information
You can hand your rattie a small piece of food and see if he can hold it in both hands and eat it. You can also try the wheelbarrow test found in this link. This link also gives symptoms and treatment information Health Guide: Pituitary Tumor

Links re medication are:
Medication Guide: Enrofloxacin / Baytril

Medication Guide: Prednisone / Prednisolone

Medication Guide: Dexamethasone

Medication Guide: Cabergoline

Medication Guide: Bromocriptine Mesylate

I hope this helps.

good luck

Sorry dawnmb57 for not replying sooner - I only just saw the updates. I always diluted half a cabergoline tablet in 0.5 ml water, to minimise the volume, and then gave by syringe.

I have lost two rats to PTs in the last few months and, as a consequence, I do have seven cabergoline tablets and about 50 prednesilone tablets available, if anyone on the forum needs them, for the cost of postage and as long as there are no postage restrictions. I know how expensive cabergoline is and I am taking a break from getting more rats, although I don't want to throw the tablets away. Please message me if interested.

Do you have any idea where you got your tablets from. Our boy need the Cabergoline desperately and we can’t get hold off any with our vet x

Can you share your experience using the cabergoline? How bad were they before you started it and did it improve their symptoms and if so for how long? I have a very sick boy and the cabergoline is being mailed to me overnight. The dex shot barely worked and he is starting oral prednisone today. He will not or cannot eat, barely moves and seems to stare blankly into space. His hind leg is turning a blackish color as it is completely paralyzed.

I bought cabergoline from the human pharmacy with a prescription from my vet.
Can he take meds or food orally because if he can not then he will be unable to take medication.
Dex injections are more effective then prednisone. Make sure he is also getting an antibiotic such as baytril if he is taking a steriod.
If his hind leg is turning a blaclish colour that is not paralisis ...... What does the vet say???
If he has not gone to see a good vet with the knowledge and experience to treat rats, he needs to see a good vet immediately

Post pictures and post a video to you tube and put the link on here
Also please start another thread so that people will respond to your questions concerning your boy
I have sent lilspaz68 a message about your boy and hopefully she will soon respond.

Even if paralyzed a leg should not be going "blackish". Is the foot cold or cool? If so this means there's little or no blood supply. Can you get a pic?
As for the cabergoline or bromocriptine you need a prescription for your vet. IF your rat has PT, this plus a steroid should help. If his leg is becoming necrotic from lack of blood flow, then he might have a systemic infection.
