I had to take Big Schpog to the rat specialist for a general check up and to reinvestigate her sneezing. Big Schpog is getting older and I wanted her to have a rat specialist vet.

I got a brand new kitten carrier, soft one, and have been getting Schpog used to being in it. She took to it just fine.

We had to take about a 30 minute bus ride to get to the vet. We got on the bus and sat near the front. Some guy saw that I had a rat and he started verbally abusing me. 'You brought a fucking a rat on the bus!!! They carry all kinds of diseases you stupid b#*$&~!' I called him ignorant but he wasn't going to stop yelling at me so I got off the bus to get away from him. He followed me!

He then came up to me and told me he wishes me and my rat get hit by a car and die.

So I had to wait for another bus to take me the rest of the way.

We finally got there and due to COVID, I couldn't go in with her.

Just as I suspected, she's sneezy due to environmental issues, mainly the radiator heat. So we will do Benadryl, one week on, one week off. The vet gave me doses for ALL my rats.

She also needs to lose about 20-40 grams. She weighs a pound. Doc wants her closer to 400 grams.

I went to a wonderful bakery and got freshly made butter tarts and I promised Schpog she could have a piece when we got home. She went to her other box and rested and had her piece of tart. She was a very good girl on such a long, crazy trip.

I call these idiots who have public freak outs 'rat bigots.' There's always one around. They can't keep their feelings to themselves and make asses out of themselves in public. I was about 2 seconds from calling the police.

I'm sorry you had to deal with such idiocy. I probably would have called the police, just because people are crazy now days, and that's just ridiculous. Glad your girl got a good check up and hopefully she will get some relief from the sneezing.

Thanks. I will call transit police and report the incident and hopefully they do something about it. Big Schpog loves her kitten carrier because I allowed her to have fun walks in it days before we actually had to use it for real. She was a very good girl.

In Toronto, I hide any rat carriers in those big No Frills bags, to prevent such incidents. Also, in Toronto, a bus or transit driver can kick me off the vehicle if my pet upsets another person so I just hide them so we can get to the vet or wherever we are going without any problems.

If your girl only has sneezing and nasal congestion you could add a humidifier as well to add moisture to the air. It can really help.

I have made my own humidifier but when I'm out of the shower I take one of them in to sit on the counter to get some steam. I've also done my best to cover the radiator since that is the culprit. Also, I live in a very high humidity climate, a temperate climate in BC. The problem is the dust from the damn radiator and I can't shut it off completely. I am going to try and turn that horrid old valve today to see if I can get it lowered because it's causing my girls havoc.

Here in BC, people are allowed to bring pets as long as they're in carriers. The bus driver wouldn't have kicked me off. He would've kicked him off but it was rush hour and it was insanely busy. I just got off and got on another, quieter bus with a very nice driver.

Thing is, I couldn't hide Schpog in a bag, simply because she's very attached to me and was looking for me the entire ride. She always wants to stay in eye contact with me. I put the carrier right to my chest so she could feel my warmth and smell that she was safe. She was a very good girl for this long trip.
