Research reptile cages a bit. They're traditionally made with those methods, and have to be sanitized often, so they need to be liquid resistant. Chew resistant... well no. But make adjustments :p Melamine is great- I've yet to hear of it getting waterlogged. The big issue with it is...

One of my girls is a crazy chewer- she chews bars if I don't hang wooden chew toys in all the corners of the cage. Wouldn't she chew the plastic ties?

Good point! I've been taking them out individually for some personal time (or just shoulder sitting time in the case of my lazy males :lol: ), so bringing the girls all out at the same time would save time... I just have to rat-proof my room before hand (it's probably muuuccchhh harder to...

Maybe I should get another cage and split the girls up into one group of 3 and one of 2? 2 of the girls were adopted together, so they're really bonded to each other and would do ok on their own.

Opps- my 3 males are in a different cage! I didn't mean to confuse there. This cage has 5 females in it- only one is an adult sized girl (and she considers her the queen). The rest are between 3 and 6 months. Yeah- no mixed gender cages for me! I don't want to double my rat population...

Sweet deal :) I've got 2 metal ledges in there that run the depth of the cage and stick out about 6 inches. I've also got hammocks and a big corner litter pan that one girl seems to think is a bed/litter :doh:

Just a quick follow up on my last post there- I remeasured my cage and it's 28x16x30... so my initial guess of 2x1x2 was wayyyyyy off. I recalculated it to get 7.8 cubic feet. I've got 5 ratties in there right now, so I'm over populated by one rat. :( So I still need to get a new cage...
