    Critter nation bars

It's the critter nation. I triple checked before buying it (to the annoyance of the shop salesperson) I'm happy my friend decided to keep her rat momma because I really would prefer to have just boys. Few more weeks and I should have my boys!

Why and how did you start keeping rats?

Wow. Let me think back that far. My first pet was a gerbil and I loved it and did really well with it, I was pretty young. And wanted something bigger, but didn't really know what or much of anything since I was a kid and this was before internet was big or easy to access and use. Anyways one...

    Critter nation bars

I found out my friend is keeping her pregnant female so no more stress in that department. I will just be bringing home my baby boys once they are ready!

    New babies soon

The cleaning doesn't worry me, I'm a little OCD so daily spot checks will happen. And I'm working on getting all the supplies together before I bring any home. 6 would be a lot, I have 3 boys I plan on, but after i agreed to those boys i found out my friend has a pregnant female she may need to...

    Critter nation bars

I'm not opposed to spaying but in the laws here are ridiculous. Most places no rats are legal. Out where I live only albino rats are legal, and it's a small town, no exotic vets or vets willing or able to treat rats.

    New babies soon

If I do end up taking in the pregnant rat, I will find her babies new homes and either keep her with one of her female pups or find her a home. I think the max amount of rats I would be able to comfortably fit in a double critter nation is 6, so if I keep her she will have at least one of her...

    Critter nation bars

I currently have some boy babies I have already agreed to take that I'm preparing for, but a friend of mine told me she might need to rehome her pregnant female, and I told her if she honestly can't keep her then I will take her and find homes for the babies. My hope is that she finds a way to...

    New babies soon

Thanks. It's not 100% sure if I will be getting the pregnant rat, her owner is still deciding on what she wants, I just want to be as prepared as possible .

    Hard Water

Thanks! Maybe I will get a jug to put the filtered water in so it's always full for the ratties

    New babies soon

Ok, so I will be eventually bringing home a few baby ratties. I've been watching a ton of videos on youtube. Reading through these forums and doing as much research as possible. My question is, how much stuff do you want in the cage for new babies? Like 6 week old babies? There is also a chance...

    Critter nation bars

Thanks, I will keep that in mind. I'm doing as much preparation as possible before I bring any babies home. If all goes well I will pick up the cage and supplies on the 1st

    Critter nation bars

I will be getting the double critter nation, and if I get both sexes I will separate them in the top and bottom halves of the cage so they don't make babies

    Critter nation bars

I plan on getting a critter nation super soon, before I bring rat babies home. I just want to double check that the bar spacing will be small enough that the new babies won't escape. I think you can bring them home as early as 6 weeks old?

    Cage Location

That makes sense. I do have my favorite chair that I'm almost always in when I'm in the living room and I can put their cage right up next to it so I can talk to them and see them.

    Hard Water

I have hard water. Kinda smells like sulfur hard water. And the landlord puts a softener in it. I don't have my rats yet so I figured I need to figure this out before I bring them home. Can they drink the water? I also usually keep a Brita jug in the fridge of the tap water filtered. If they...

    Introduction not quite there yet.

So true. That's why people have "special" rats and breed them responsibly. You just can't advertise and it's better not to take them out of your house on a leash because you never know if there will be some asshole who knows the law and decides to report.

Well as far as I understand albinos can breed, but they say the reason for the law only allowing albino rats is so they can't breed. It's uneducated nonsense. Plus any rats that got loose would have a low percentage chance to survive the winter. Sad but true.

It's a ridiculous law honestly. Especially since from what I understand the reason they allow albinos is because they can't breed. But again it is rarely enforced as long as you don't go around flaunting it.

Albinos are legal in certain areas of alaska. I'm in a small town that they are. The law is not really one that is enforced though as long as you don't go around advertising special rats. I've known people in the city who own rats even though it isn't legal inside the city limits.

    Cage Location

That makes sense. I have space for a cage in both areas. But if I put it in the livingroom they will be next to me and my favorite chair that I am always in. I like the idea of having them next to me for most of the day. Will the be ok with semi-loud music from time to time, I like it when I clean.
