    Rat Smell

So i currently have 7 boys living in a 3 tier cage, and as of 2 days ago I'm at my parents temporarily for a few weeks. Normally the rats are in my big living area so the smell kind of dissipates and spreads across the room evenly so the smell is barely noticeable. But currently they are in my...

    Cagemates not getting along

Exotic vets are high in demand and rare which is why they charge more. Also small mammals surgeries come at a higher risk than dogs and cats. That’s why they are pricier. But the average vet won’t charge more than $150, if they try more go elsewhere. You may have to drive but if it’ll better the...

    Cagemates not getting along

No it is not normal to be that pricy. I paid $104 for my rats neuter and that was including pain meds and a first time consultation with that specific clinic. I had to travel for the clinic but if I fact in the gas towards driving there and back twice that day it still was less than $130

Rats go to the bathroom everywhere?

I personally use puppy pads on their more active platforms, which makes clean up super easy, but if you have heavy chewers (I fortunately dont) it's not the best option. I do have to put down 3 or 4 puppy pads a platform bc they like to pull it up and nest with it. But it's a very cheap option...

    Cagemates not getting along

Neutering might help but if they are both very dominant it will only help so much. They are reaching peak hormone age, so it is very possible that in a month or two when their hormones calm the aggression resolves on its own. It did with my boy who was showing some aggression and dominance...

    Bad Introductions or Potential Aggression

the best you can do is keep them separate but every day have them together supervised. It might be best to have your older rats go into the babies spaces for a while. He's probably just being territorial of his home and his space. Make sure the rats can always smell each other so they get used...

What's on her eye?! It's getting worse! Help!

She most likely scratched it playing (does she have cage mates?). In which case the damage could be permanent. Vets will sometimes give eye drops to help, but it looks very bad. There is a chance she may become blinded in that eye or have limited vision

    Balding in Young Rat

She could just be stressed. One of my rats Barry has thinner fur than his cage mates bc he is extremely anxious. He's not even scared of me or his cage mates, or skittish, he's just an anxious rat who likes everything to be particular. New things make him sneezy and anxious and then he gets used...

    Aggression

So my rat Winn started displaying some very aggressive behaviors towards me and his 3 cage mates right after i adopted 3 babies. I have 7 rats now all males, 4 adults (all about 7-8 months) and 3 babies (almost 3 m/o). The adults and babies were kept in separate cages and i have introduced them...

    Behavioral Issues

Thanks for the advice, I figured as much. And I’ve been talking to my breeder, to see what she thinks and she’s said from my boys dumbo line Im the only one who’s reported any issues with hormonal aggression. Normally her dumbo Russian blues are sweet potatoes, which he is most of the time with...

    Behavioral Issues

As I said, it’s not a common issue, it’s just definitely not something to brush off. He’s normally super friendly. So I don’t think I’ll need a towel, I don’t want to show that I’m afraid of him, bc that might feed his ballsy attitude he’s been showing me with these bites even more. And when I...

    Behavioral Issues

Yeah soon as the holidays are up I’m calling the vet to get a quote on how much it’ll cost to neuter, and make the appointment. I’ve been saving up for this pretty much since he bit me the first time in case it didn’t go away

    Diurnal Rat?

It's not that unusual. All 4 of mine are diurnal, they tend to be asleep at the end of the day after I play with them for a good portion of the afternoon. Probably bc theyre tuckered out.

All they want is Baby Kale

It's perfectly fine, they'll eventually get to the fruits and veggies once they are out of the kale, their veggie diet should consist of mostly leafy greens anyway

    Recommended snacks ?

Millet sprays (often used for birds) are a great treat here and there, plain greek yogurt is great for them, plain cheerios are great, almonds sometimes (though monitor it bc too much protein can result in hair loss), rice pops are a fun treat, watermelon if they like it is a great treat bc it's...

    Behavioral Issues

Hi, I'm Julia, I have 4 rats, all from the same breeder, in a very large Ferret Nation style cage. My breeder is quite reputable and well known in my area, she's great and breeds amazing healthy rats with great temperaments. However, for about a month now, one of my rats Mick has been...

    Trust Training Help Needed

Thanks for the help, their breeder was giving me some questionable advice saying I need to handle them right off the bat and etc. But after a bit more research I think I’m gonna give them plenty of space, but still offer treats and feed out of my hand and see if they take. I’m not gonna attempt...

    Trust Training Help Needed

They are very desensitized to loud noises, they don’t mind my presence in the room at all, they come up when I am changing food or cleaning. They’re well socialized in terms of being used to people, but they seemingly have no experience being picked up and held without being utterly terrified...

    Trust Training Help Needed

Hi, my name is Julia. As of 3 days ago I am the proud rat mom of two beautiful 6 week old pups, Barry and Oliver. They are my first every rat pair. My two boys are very small, and both very skittish. Barry is a little more adventurous, he comes up to the cage when I am feeding and cleaning, when...
