    Fat rat

Thats a good idea! Thank you. I will try to play with him with a feather toy. Hopefully he will like it. They have a wheel, but only one of them ever uses it. He does get some exercise from going up and down in the cage. Its the 4 level critter nation cage. They are not, as far as I know...

    Fat rat

Hello! I have 4 male rats (about 2 years old). Three of them are normal weight. One of them is, shall we say, a bit on the chunky side. Okay, he's huge. Quite obese. I feed Oxbow Essentials Adult Rat food. The only treats they get are one nut (either a quarter of a walnut or an almond), or a...

    Critter nation cage recommendations?

Yes, mine chew everything. EVERYTHING. All of the boxes I put in for beds are appreciated but apparently need renovations and added ventilation before being acceptable.

    Why under the ladders???

I have the double critter nation cage, so 4 ladders. The 2 ladders on the largest floors are the most popular, or um, should I say, "poopular" (no. no I shouldn't). Ahem, anyway, yeah, the crazy boys pair up, the 2 grey ones tend to hang out on the top smaller floor and the 2 white ones (well...

    Critter nation cage recommendations?

My rats second the empty tissue boxes (the long boxes). It's great! Every box of tissue comes with a free rat bed! Also, shoe boxes have been much appreciated, especially if I leave the paper in them. Keep your eyes out for sales at JoAnn's. They recently had a sale on their fleece for $2.99 a...

    Why under the ladders???

Why are their poops concentrated under the ladders? Anyone else notice this? I have now put the base of the ladders in small paint trays with newspaper litter in them. 99% of the poops are now in the trays! What is the behavioral drive that is prompting them to 'go' at the base of their ladders...

    Dried figs?

I bought some dried figs for myself but I really don't care for them. Does anyone know if they are okay for my male rats? Thanks!

Do males always get aggressive during puberty?

The place where I got mine said that he is a double rex, so this gives me hope that my little guy will have a normal lifespan!

New rat owner, should I get a third?

Hi! You should create your own fresh topic so that people can see your question and respond to it. I don't think anyone is looking at this thread anymore because it is too old and everyone will assume that replies have already been given. If you ask your question in a new topic, then you should...

Do males always get aggressive during puberty?

I saw it on several websites. They say that their immune systems are weaker because of the genetic mutation that causes the hairlessness. Perhaps it's only true if they are the truly hairless ones. I dont know.

Do males always get aggressive during puberty?

Really?! That is great to hear! I sure hope that is the case for my little guy!

How much did you pay for neutering?

Thanks everyone. Seems like I'm in a pricey area. I'll just wait and hope for the best. I've since brought home 2 more males so it would actually be $1200 - $1400 if I had them all done. That's just too much money to spend on unnecessary surgery.

Do males always get aggressive during puberty?

Thank you. I sure hope they stay sweet. I researched rats as pets before getting them and also talked to people about rat ownership but aggression never came up. In fact, I was told that boys are more docile and better for holding and petting. But then just recently I read about biting. I am...

How much did you pay for neutering?

Thank you for your input! It may also be that people are just repeating what they read on the internet and spreading false info. Instead of saying, "I read that it only costs about $40," they are saying, "It only costs about $40," when they have no actual experience themselves. I have another...

Do males always get aggressive during puberty?

So, I've been reading a lot about males getting aggressive and biting their humans when they reach about 6 months old. Does this always happen? Do males always have to be neutered to fix this? Right now, the two males I have are so sweet. Shy, but sweet. They never bite. Is this temporary? Are...

How much did you pay for neutering?

Hi there! How much did you pay to neuter your male rat(s)? I have read a bunch of people saying that it costs around $40 to neuter rats, but every vet I have spoken to has given me a price of over $300 per rat. Where are these $40 neuters coming from? Has anyone actually paid that little? Thanks

New rat owner, should I get a third?

Hello! First-time rat owner here. I've had cats, dogs, fish, and guinea pigs, but this is my first time with rats. We got 2 boys that were labeled as 6-8 weeks old when we got them. So, now they are approximately 12 weeks old. We got one rex and one hairless (not for their appearance or fur, but...

Vet in Northeast Mass or Southern NH?

Does anyone know of a good, reasonably priced rat vet in northeastern Massachusetts or southern New Hampshire? The ones I have called so far either dont take rats or they are very expensive. I'm getting quotes of $350 and up for neutering and $70 and up for a simple exam. If something was wrong...
