Recommended cages for 3-4 male rats

Hey all, I keep doing this thing of coming back, leaving for a while, and then coming back. My health has been a little questionable lately, hence my brief returns. Without getting too much into personal detail, I have a chronic illness that affects my energy levels and I almost always feel some...

    Losing weight before showing symptoms?

When I brought my boy, Murtagh, to the vet yesterday (Wednesday), he indicated that Murtagh was underweight and had likely been losing weight for some time before his sudden onset of lethargy on Monday. Had I been less lazy about weighing my rats, I would've caught the weight loss before he...

    Lethargic rat

Yeah long time no see. Little bummed this is my coming back post, but I'm worried about my boy. UPDATE: I brought Murtagh to the vet. The vet took a feel of his organs and said his organs didn't feel enlarged in his abdomen and his kidneys felt fine. They took some x-rays of his chest and said...

    Lethargic rat

First off, I'd like to say: I have called every exotic animal vet within an hour's drive of me and they're all at capacity and don't have any appointments open. I did call back my vet and make an appointment for Wednesday afternoon (this was the earliest I could get him in). But I do plan to...

    Rat lice. Ugh.

Sorry, just got around to being able to answer this. Should I try to give my babies some? I can find their exact ages and weights if I need to. Here's the link: REVOLUTION Topical Solution for Kittens & Puppies, under 5 lbs, (Mauve Box), 3 Doses (3-Months Protection) - Chewy.com

    Rat lice. Ugh.

Hey guys! It's been a very long time since I posted here, partly because of me finishing up school and then looking for a job. In the middle of the pandemic. Great idea, I know. Anyways, I'm posting a thread here because I have a bad bout of lice on my rats (I forgot to freeze my litter bedding...

    I love when...

...I walk up to my rats' cage and just say their goofy nicknames and get them to brux and boggle immediately. Or when they climb onto me, wanting playtime and kisses. Share what you love about your rats!

    Roasted peanuts

Yeah, my grandma got some unsalted pecan halves and unsalted brazil nuts as well. Maybe I looked in the wrong place, but I didn't see either nut listed on the food do's and don'ts on this forum. Google says those nuts are okay, but... Google also told me peanuts (uncooked) were safe :p

    Roasted peanuts

I just bought a bag of unsalted, in-shell peanuts. They are not roasted, they are raw (I know, I had a brain fart lol). I looked up a recipe to roast the peanuts myself, do you think this will work fine for my rats? (All intact boys, ranging from 1yr-2.5yr, if applicable) I was thinking that...

    Shoulder Rats

I have a shoulder rat all of the time! Ironically enough, their names all started with G... Gideon, Grumpy, Genji, and Gabe. Although, those boys often liked being cradled like a baby, Gabe especially. Those boys would also climb on me as soon as the cage opened and sit on my shoulder as I did...

    Rats and Singing

Funny, because I found a video rather recently about researchers attempting to "decode" rat noises. I posted the thread here.

    Peeing in the Litter Box

Click on this link and you'll be taken to an image from Reddit (not mine). People use river rocks as pee rocks and put them in litterboxes.

The gang don’t like hammocks/hanging toys!

Sometimes it takes a while for rats to discover hammocks and how awesome they are to lay in. I've had hammocks in my cage for about three months, and then my one rat, Arthur suddenly started using them exclusively. Sometimes I forget and can't find him until the hammock moves and a rat...

    Hi!I'm new here

Welcome to the forum! What a beautiful bunbun you had! I'm sorry you had to lose him on that day :( Do you know what age the babies were when she separated males from females? I hope it was before the females could get pregnant.

    Rats and Singing

I like to think my rats enjoy my singing, but my bird often butts in and, uh... tries to sing along a lot more off key than me... Otherwise, my boys seem to enjoy it, especially if they're lying on my chest and sleeping. I wonder for those rats if they enjoyed the vibration me singing brought them

    Rats in the News

Lookit the absolute adorable rats! Those wild ones are still pretty darn cute. Oh, also... fun fact I learned while doing my project in my Ecology class. Pet rats and wild rats are scientifically distinct species, similar to dogs and wolves. Wild brown rats are just Rattus norvegicus, while our...

I tried getting my rats' footprints....

We were going to try t replicate an ink pad next time. Soak a paper towel in some sort of rat-safe ink (on top of a plastic piece or something lol), have Genji walk over it, and then onto the canvas. I'll have to try non-toxic finger paint. While it was funny to have green fingers, I'd rather...

One rat sneezing ONLY during free roam

Usually I put something on the floor, a shower curtain for example, to make sure they can't get irritated by floor cleaners. It could be harsh chemicals from floor cleaners that could be causing sneezes. Otherwise, it could be as benign as excited sneezes! New smells can sometimes trigger sneezes.

I am allergic to my new rats!

Is it hives and general itchiness, or is very severe like throat closing? And please be truthful, we love our rats, but if it's a health hazard to you, it would be best to return them. For me, I have a... medium-level allergy. My eyes get puffy and watery, I sneeze, I get hives, etc. I found...
