    Quarantine & intros

I finally got a slightly bigger cage for my boys, which means I can now take in one or two more friends! I might be able to rescue some younger boys soon. My question is: Would it be better to move my 2 current boys into the bigger cage first, then use the original cage (after deep cleaning of...

How much did you pay for neutering?

Oh my bad, I misunderstood! That makes sense. I have heard others say they didn't think it was worth the risk of the surgery if it wasn't needed, and therefore don't do it unless necessary, but I can see why people might want to neuter by default.

How much did you pay for neutering?

Funny, I just posted same thing yesterday in a rat facebook group! I'm going through something fairly similar--got males because I was told they are sweet and cuddly, and of my two one is very sweet (but not so much cuddly) and the other is developing hormonal aggression. I love them all the...

    Opinions on this cage?

I've been looking for an upgrade for my two boys and found this bird cage listed. Its dimensions are 26x18x37 (I'm assuming inches, but it doesn't say) which according to online cage calculators should be fine for two rats. The flat part at the top also opens up. Would I need to add levels...

    Suddenly aggressive towards me

An update for anyone who is interested: Charlie's only had one more incident since these initial times, and I think I'm getting better at reading behavior before he gets to the point of biting. I noticed that once he got in that mood (still unsure of what triggered it), if I reached to pick him...

    Suddenly aggressive towards me

Thank you so much! I think a big part of my problem (and feeling down and helpless) is not having experience in this and the know-how for rat behavior, so your answer is a huge help. I didn't even think of having a towel handy; I'll certainly do that. About the crawling over hands/legs/feet...

    Suddenly aggressive towards me

Hey guys, I'm looking for some help with some new behavior issues with one of my boys. So here is some background info first. I have two boys just about 7 months old. I got a harness/leash a few weeks ago (specially designed for rats) and have been introducing them to it. Though neither of...

How to tire out young boys?

That makes total sense--thanks for the insight! I'll look into the coroplast; maybe I could put it in a different room and expand the play area with that so they'd have more room. That fisher price toy is adorable, I never would have thought of that!

How to tire out young boys?

Good to know! I will try getting some new toys, and some more wooden ones. They have some in their cage currently but haven't expressed too much interest in them; maybe switching it up will help. Oh I love Shadow the Rat! I actually just taught them to spin from her videos :) But I haven't...

How to tire out young boys?

So I have two sweet boys that will turn 6 months old in few days (Whoo!). These are my first rats, so I'm not entirely sure when they start to mellow out. I try to get them as much free roaming time as I can, which is in my bathroom where I have a few cardboard boxes containing crinkled paper...

    Switching foods

Disclaimer: I'm a new rat owner as well, and fairly new to the forum. But I believe the brand you're talking about is (Harlan) Teklad 2014? I started out on Mazuri as that was that was recommended to me elsewhere, but switched to Oxbow after joining this forum and they seemed to like it just...

    Spinach and lab blocks

Thanks so much guys! Just ordered Teklad for the lads. And that makes sense about the spinach!

    Spinach and lab blocks

I have some quick diet questions as a new owner: What is the verdict on spinach? I've always lumped it in with other greens and figured it's pretty healthy, but I noticed when others have been talking about leafy greens here they haven't mentioned it, and one place said to be cautious with it...

    The Quick Question Thread

My quick question: I've seen that a lot of people use a vinegar/water solution as cage cleaner--would apple cider vinegar work for that? If not, is there a preferred type? And what ratios have you found work best? Edit: Thank you!

    Wet looking around eyes

Thanks for such quick answers! Emmabee, those are neat pictures--I didn't know their colors could change like that. And SQ that link is so helpful, thanks for sharing! It does look like that is what's happening; I've noticed his coat changing a bit, and the time lines up as it says that...

    Wet looking around eyes

I am a very new rat owner and am a little concerned about one of my new boys. He is almost 3 months old, and I've had him for almost 6 weeks. Recently (within the last 2 weeks) I've noticed he looks wet around his eyes, or stained somehow. I've read about porphyrin which can build up around...
