    Carpet

I've got a strip of vinyl under the cage. They basically have their own room they can mess up if they want. For now, I'm sticking with the crap carpet.

    Ratty accident

I actually prefer pumpkin seeds, partly because you can snap them in half so they go further. :)

Considering pet rats but a little worried

You're as likely to get ill from a dog or a cat as a rat. Possibly more so, as cats and dogs range outside and come into contact with other animals/feces. Re: multi-species pet ownership. Some rat owners do keep rats and cats reasonably successfully, but generally the rats have a separate room...

    Carpet

Question - do any of us actually have nice carpets?! XD I moved into an ex-rental a few years ago, and there's this battered, porridge-coloured carpet. I haven't changed it - and thank God for that - because my girls are a bunch of rug-munchers (hur-hur). They've also had a go at the skirting...

    Ratty accident

Today I'm lucky enough to be able to work from home. I'm sitting in my rat room being bothered by my mischief. I was wondering, have you ever accidentally bothered your rattos in a daft way? I was just feeding them sunflower seeds during a break, dropped some and reached down to pick one up...

    Help administering Baytril?

Hi - as a very, very last resort (when syringing or hiding food wouldn't work), I'd pop one of my girls in a hospital cage (the one used to carry them around) with only that bit of food. It's not ideal, but normally they get greedy enough after a little while that they eat all of it - and that...

    Pain management

I was advised by the vet to keep the Metacam going a bit longer as an anti-inflammatory as she had a recent URI. She's doing a bit better already - eating bits of dark chocolate and sweetcorn. :)

    Pain management

Hi both - yes, Lilspaz. I posted this before I got the RRLWTK message. She'll be on metacam for week or so, with enrobactin and biosolvon (to stave off an existing breathing issue). She made it through the night. I'm going to check on her again now and give her the first dose for today...

    Pain management

Hi everyone. My little Misty went in for a spay today with a suspected tumour (booked in the day of this conversation: https://www.ratshackforum.com/threads/vaginal-bleeding.36141/ Turns out she had something "very strange" in her womb, which has now been removed. She's my third rat to have...

    Some art I made :)

    Super cute. :)

    Vaginal bleeding

Thanks SQ. I suspected pyo. She's been booked in for a spay, and is on a cocktail of drugs (metacam, enrobactin and others).

    Vaginal bleeding

My little Misty-rat is exhibiting spotty bleeding from her vagina. She also seems to have a uri. I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow first thing, but she may have had the bleeding issue for some time (we found little spots of blood in the cage but no evidence of where it came from last night, and...

    Pics of rats!

Here's my naughty crew. :) Aeryn, Rey, Rose and Misty.

    When to start bonding

When I have rescues, I usually give them 48 hours to get used to the cage before giving them free run time, but you can start bonding right away. Offering treats, gently stroking them or offering your hand is good. Sounds like you're already doing that!

    Rattie revenge!

I love Rick and Morty. It's so nihilistic. But one episode in the third season involved Rick (pickle Rick) doing something horrible to rats. I thought they should be able to get their own back... Don't worry, little Aeryn didn't get to keep the pickle. :D

    Ratto books (for Christmas?)

Hello everyone. :) Sorry I haven't been anywhere near as active as I wanted to be. It's been a hectic time. That's partly because the last book in my Rat Tales Trilogy was published in Mid November. I just thought I'd post in case anyone was interested in ordering a copy or book bundle. :)...

    Priss

My oldest girl, Priss, died last week. I wrote a memorial blog for her. She was so beautiful. https://rhianwriting.wordpress.com/2018/08/14/rest-in-peace-princess-priss/

    Oldie behaviour

Thanks SQ. :) . That is helpful. She's not at the mush stage, yet, but she does scoff baby food when she can. We've had to deal with rats with HLD, so cage design shouldn't be a problem.

    Thank you :)

Yeah, the stories were inspired by my first three adoptees. One of them pushed her way into my loo and jumped into the toilet. I had to fish her out (and secure the door better) - and that made me realise just how mischievous they are. Perfect heroes for a book.

    Oldie behaviour

Hi ratto friends. I'm just after some age comparison advice. This is Priss. She's two years and just over eight months old. She's a fatto ratto, but has lost some weight around her spine (lots of loose skin) and she's going ginger (aww <3). Naturally she's slower than she was, but she patters...
