    I Give Up. Name Her.

It's been about a month since I my two girls from the very poor conditions they were keeping them in at a local petstore. They look almost identical, both hooded rats with similar spots running down their backs. The main difference is one of them is a dark shade of brown and the other is light...

Portland Oregon - Southwest Animal Hospital

No neuters done, sorry. The office visit is usually about $40 but Dr. Powers usually waves it if he doesn't have to do any diagnosis or anything like that. They're good people, though. If I were to do any kind of procedure like that many of the technicians are rat owners themselves and I'd trust...

    Optimal Diet Tips

Hello all, I've read a lot about the do's and dont's of rat diets. What they can eat and what will make them sick. What I haven't been able to find is a solid weekly diet for rats, such as what and how much to give every day or throughout the week. So far my four young girls are free fed Oxbow...

    The Next Step in Bonding

Update: Nettie and Bubs are doing so much better. They come to the end of the cage when I approach it and will crawl up my sleeved arm for treats and sometimes it them on my shoulder. If not they scamper back into the cage and the process repeats. They are somewhat comfortable being petted but...

Still Angry, I Want Your Help

We do, but the only thing I can find regarding them on their website is about keeping rat poison away from dogs  I'll have to call them and see if they can do anything.

Still Angry, I Want Your Help

Hello all, I'm not sure if any of you remember my post about getting my two new ladies from a pet store in Portland. (Thread: Pet Stores are a Rescue Themselves, or something like that.) The jist is that they kept rats in god-awful conditions. My blood still boils whenever I think about it and...

Theoretical Question to end a Debate: Could wild rats escape a critter nation?

Aside from the moral aspects of owning a snake, I think the combination of trying to house rats and snakes in the same area is a bad idea. I've heard from others that have tried it and done their research that the scent of rats would put a snake in a constant predatory state and never be...

    Securing Fleece (How To)

I'll certainly have to try it. I don't know why they're so determined, I don't think it's the heat. Recently it's been about a constant 68-70 degrees Fahrenheit in my apartment. I'm guessing they just feel more secure under the fleece than a hide.

    Securing Fleece (How To)

They're way too smart for me  Used binder clips and they're already under the fleece a day later. I had about a two inch gap in between each clip hoping they wouldn't catch on for a while longer. Looks like I'm going to have to completely hook their fleece down

    My Fry & my Marmot

So sweet that he's making friends.

    Securing Fleece (How To)

Are there any concerns with the rats chewing on the clips? Such as toxins in the plastic or metal?

    Securing Fleece (How To)

Recently I upgraded my cage, and changed from using paper bedding to a fleece lining on the floors. I now have four rats, two that are almost adult size and two that are still pups. The problem I'm having is they have been slipping under the fleece and sleeping/relaxing under there. It's a...

Pet Stores Are a Rescue in Their Own

A week ago, my girlfriend and I wound up at a pet store in Portland, OR that we usually don't go to. Not for any particular reason, we just had one we regularly shopped at already. As we were browsing around looking for rat food, I saw their small mammal section and noticed they didn't have any...

    Messed up situation (new)

I feel like there's a certain social-conduct violation when posting videos of food preparation tactics on a board where the food is an animal the board is trying to save...

    Upgrading The Cage

I just placed an order online for a much bigger cage for my rats. Right now I have an aquarium with a cage topper and I absolutely despise the small space and lack of ventilation. The new one is much bigger (made for ferrets) and I'm really excited about the room they'll have. My big concern is...

Portland Oregon - Southwest Animal Hospital

Also near Portland, Stark Street Animal Clinic has been very kind to me and has outstanding reviews. Doctor Powers is the main vet for small animals and has been great.
