    Bye bye Doc and Dexter

So sorry :( I hope you can find some comfort in your memories of all the love and happiness you shared with them. Their little lives are so precious and much too short. Rest in peace Doc and Dexter, you were loved and cherished and will not be forgotten <3

    New adolescent puppies...grrr.

Thank you SQ that means a lot to me. It will get easier with time I'm sure, and I am doubling down on spending more alone time with just me and Gypsy so we can both decompress a bit. I always tell her she better live forever, because I would be lost without her.

Thank you Kaat, it does feel a bit of a relief to not have it all rattling around in my head any longer!

    Scotty

Oh my gosh, poor guy! That must've been so scary and painful for him!! Ramps and platforms that are not solid will most definitely be covered at my house!

I'm sorry SQ :( When beloved friends near the end it never gets easier no matter how many times we have to see it happen. I hope you can find some comfort in this sad time.

    New adolescent puppies...grrr.

I kind of just need to get this off my chest, this post is less about advice and more of just trying to let it go. Sorry that it's gonna be pretty long. A month ago my boyfriend and I adopted two Australian cattle dog adolescent puppies from our local animal shelter, about 7 months old. They...

    Play pen?

When I had my rats I built a playpen out of cardboard boxes. I opened the top and bottom, cut all the way down one side so it was one big flat piece, collected a bunch and taped them together with gorilla tape and made it into a big circle around the cage. Just make sure it ends up tall enough...

    Hurt rat ears.

If SQ is right about it being sarcoptic mange unfortunately that would be very contagious to other rats and to you, and any other pet that might come in contact. So hopefully that's not it. Sarcoptic mites are the name given to them on animals, but on humans it is called scabies. At least on...

Hello. I'm a new Rat Mommy.

Hi Cheryl. That was kind of you to take in the wee baby. Hopefully it is not too young to survive without its momma. If you post a picture, the people here may be able to guess a ballpark age range. Medicine dropper syringes (the kind without needles) and the squeeze dropper like you find in a...

    Why Spay or Neuter Rats?

I want to be able to afford to neuter my rats if I ever get more, for a slightly different reason, which may sound kind of silly but here it goes anyway: their testicles are kind of gross looking :p In addition to all the health benefits, and another reason I like the idea is that you could...

Do you have theme names for your rats?

Not myself, but a friend of mine had two males named Shawn and Gus (from the tv show Psych.) And once I came across three guinea pigs named Billy, Joe, and MacGuffrey, which is from a song from the Veggie Tales kids movies (Billy Joe MacGuffrey was a very clumsy kid song.) Always thought those...

Ideas for how to help your ratties deal with the Heat

That must have been really hard to leave them, I can't imagine :( I'm glad all of you and your pets made it through safely!

Rat sitter contract, need ideas please?

I agree with Fidget! Full payment in cash before they leave or the deal's off. I used to pet-sit dogs and cats and I never accepted a job with someone unless they payed me ahead of time, even for a friend. I have them write down their vet clinic's name, address, phone number, and have them...

    Best toys?!

It takes me a long tome to finish a bottle of wine so they were a hot commodity around my house for a while. I had my friends save theirs for me lol.

Ideas for how to help your ratties deal with the Heat

That's a great idea! I learned last summer that rats are excellent swimmers. I have wild rats that live under my house and shed, and last summer I went out to our small pool and found a wild rat having a swim on a hot day! When I walked up to the edge and she saw me, she went under the water...

    Cold laser therapy for rats

Thanks for sharing that experience!! When I first heard of it, I thought it was snake oil (so to speak.) Learning more about it, there are in vitro studies and randomized double - blind clinical trials that have studied/are studying it. It's also called Low Level Light Therapy, or LLLT. Here is...

RE-EDIT: What's the cost to care for a rat 1 week?

Thanks SQ I haven't heard of that website, I'm a fan of JoinRats.com, thats where I learn the most besides here and now I will check out RatGuide as well. On the note of fleece bedding not being absorbent enough, I have seen some people on YouTube that sew fleece and a towel together, with the...
