    Anesthesia experience?

I am a retired anesthesiologist( human) . During my medical school days many years ago ( 1970s), i performed many rat anesthetics as part of surgical projects. They all survived including major surgical procedures such as cardiac surgery. In my opinion, the inhaled anesthetics are safer for...

    Help with pneumonia treatment!

Carbon dioxide is a very cruel way to euthanize any one.The gas stimulates the drive to breathe so that the animal suffers distress from that increased drive to breathe. Perhaps you meant carbon monoxide which is an entirely different chemical agent.

    Pet rat quandary

Hi, I have had the privilege of housing many pet rats. How do members rationalize the sad truth that the little love buddies will die relatively soon after one has learned to bind with them? Personally , I cannot handle the grief of such predictable loss. Any help would be greatly appreciate...

    Tumor Removal?

most rats develop tumors. The tumors tend to recurr despite surgery. Those are huge tumors. Because ( in my experience) the tumors are not attached to deep organs, they can be removed by vets who are highly experienced in their care.

    Rat skin lesion

I have been watching this thread for a while. If this is an abscess, antibiotics alone WILL NOT be effective. The abscess must be drained. Do not listen to anyone giving misinformed opinions about what type of antibiotics to use etc. Although I am not a vet, I have been a physician for 40...

Desperately in need of help, sudden death

From the nature of the deaths, it is highly likely that there is an infectious origin. There is crowding which is a setup for disease spread. There seems to be few options other than Separating the rats as much as possible Immediately removing the dead rats and disposal A thorough cleaning of...

    Rat skin lesion

There should be a vet available on call for emergencies. That is standard practice. From your description it is likely that the rat has generalized sepsis. Another alternative is to contact your local human doctor for advice?

    Rat skin lesion

Agree with Jacksapp. Using an ultrasound device, it is easy to distinguish between a solid mass or a fluid filled( abscess ) swelling. A biopsy is essential in my opinion, especially if the lump is not reducing in size. This is a simple process and one which any competent vet should be able to do.

    Rat skin lesion

The seems to be a lot of swelling at the site of the infection. There may an abscess as well. In that case antibiotics alone will not work. The patient will need to have the abscess drained by a small surgical procedure. Obviously I cannot see the whole area but that is my initial impression as...

    Rat skin lesion

Two ideas The hydrogen peroxide is not effective with infected wounds. It causes tissue damage. A better alternative is the saline rinses Triple antibiotic cream is cheap and may work You should take him to a vet and explain your financial situation. The vet should give you antibiotics as the...

Why and how did you start keeping rats?

I am on a mission of caring for rats as a result of my precocious childhood. Since about 4 yrs old, I wanted to become a surgeon. My father encouraged that, and I ( with his help) started to do surgical procedures on rats. They all received anaesthesia which I developed and they all survived...
