    Mouse

Hello, I'm just chiming in to say that you don't need to separate your male mice unless you see them fighting to the point of drawing blood. I have had mouse brothers that got along for a while but eventually the hormones kicked in, and they all needed to be in separate levels/cages. There...

Reasons for rapid breathing (other than URI)?

One more thing - could you please let me know if this seems to be the right dose of Metacam? for a 650 gm rat: 0.4cc twice daily of 1.5mg/mL liquid I think she wants him to be on this for a while, but I only have a 10mL bottle (for $40!) and that will be gone pretty quickly on that dose. I...

Reasons for rapid breathing (other than URI)?

Thanks again for your support, guys! Cloud's x-ray came back as normal, with no tumors or obvious heart problems. So he's now on Clavamox for a month, and Metacam for anti-inflammatory purposes. If this is the answer, I'm supposed to see results within a week. I'm hopeful...

Reasons for rapid breathing (other than URI)?

Thank you SQ and Miss Rattie for your help and encouragement! So, at the the appointment today, the vet still couldn't hear anything wrong with Cloud. We had x-rays done, but something was wrong with the machine/computer system, so results won't be in until Monday. She said (and the assistant...

Reasons for rapid breathing (other than URI)?

Hi. My poor Cloud has been breathing strangely for a few weeks (rapidly/quickly), and sometimes has a squeaky sound while breathing. The vet gave me Baytril and Doxy in case it was an upper respiratory infection, although she said that she didn't hear any of the telltale crackling that is...

I made the wrong decision, and the guilt is overwhelming

You are not selfish or stupid -- so far from it! You put so much thought into what was right at each stage. I had to put my girl to sleep recently, and the vet was really helpful by explaining that there are no black and white answers when it comes to this. We want to make the "right"...

    Deformed Jaw and Teeth Problems

One of my girls had tooth issues, and I had to bring her in to the vet every 4 weeks to get them trimmed. What I found was that the price for this varies GREATLY from vet to vet. The first vet I took her to charged $160 for a trim, the next suggested $30 per visit, since he knew I would be...

    Rat hiccups

I am by no means an expert, but two of my rats often hiccup when happy, alongside bruxing and boggling. Ariana

Rescue rat test nips too hard!

My arm also became my rat's girlfriend. I couldn't believe it, he just coming back and getting me again when I tried to move away from him. My hands were dripping blood and (months later) I still have deep scabs. I had never had boys before, so didn't recognize the rubbing behavior. He got...

Harley Rat Not Responding to Amoxi, Enro. or Doxy; What next?

I am by no means an expert, but a few of my rats start to hiccup when I pet them or even just sit and talk to them! I think someone else called them "happy hiccups." Maybe he just loves you (in addition to any other issues he may have...)

    Tall Cage vs. Long Cage

Tall cages also take up less floor space. After getting a critter nation, I cannot stand to clean any other type of cage. It's wonderful not to have to bend your arms in unnatural positions! Ariana

    Greetings from Maryland!

I use fleece mostly, usually over a towel (since the girls like to dig under one layer, and chew...) I have realized though that nice, fluffy, second-hand pillowcases are the perfect size for critter nations. They fit over the entire ledge tray, or on the bottom of the pans. I have found...

Pet store supply of animals dwindling!!!

Our Petsmarts here (near Rochester, NY) have rescue rodents (housing them for our local shelters). Petco sells rodents, but I haven't seen any rats there for a while. Pet supplies plus just had reptiles and fish the last time I was there. : )

    Teeth issues

Yes, the bottom ones are like that. Here's a quick sketch I did that show the shape. : ) Oh, and I'm not sure if it's related, but she always has porphyrin around one eye. The vet thought that maybe that one tooth had been irritating it from inside, but she still has it, although the tooth no...

    Teeth issues

Good to hear that my vet visit was on the expensive side. I'll have to look around for other vets. Well, both bottom teeth are splayed (like a V), so there is nothing flat to wear down the top teeth, which end up at a sharp angle. Does that make sense? In other words, all four teeth need to...

    Teeth issues

Hi all, My girl Sandy is approximately 2 years old. We've had her for about 16 months, and she was an adult when we got her. Recently her teeth started coming in misaligned -- the bottom ones splayed and really long, the top ones worn down to one side. I took her to the vet and got the...

    Our dead critter's bodies.

Wow - I can imagine that was a heartbreaking ad to post, and such a brave thing for you to do! And really could save a sweet rat's life.

Urgent situation in New York not Maine

Our local (Rochester, NY) rescue is planning on taking some of them in and finding fosters (including me!) for some more. We're about 5 hours away from NYC, but we think someone is headed this way. The photo of the man holding his friend is so sweet!
