We got a new cat yesterday! He's an adorable siamese mix, I think chocolate point, cutest face ever. He's about 10 months old, but very small and he has extra toes which make his feet so cute and big. I'll post pics (maybe). So anyway, this made me use my good ol' friend the interwebs to search...

Long story short, we're considering getting a schnauzer. I was wondering if he would pose a major threat to the rats, seeing they are ratters and all. The rats' cage can easily be blocked off from the dog, it's a couple stories higher than where the dog would spend most of its time and my door...

I have an opaque solid wheel and my rats seem to stop frequently as well. I've never used a mesh one so I can't compare. I mostly just listen to the wheel when I'm trying to sleep (GAH!) so I've never really noticed how they run on it. Interesting observation.
