This isn't relating my rat, but i definitly need some serious help. my dog got sprayed by a skunk this morning right in the face, eeek. it smells horrible, and hes so miserable because of it too. how do i get rid of the smell?! i heard the tomatoe juice bath is a myth. has this ever happened to anyone before? any ideas on what to do?

I heard that if you don't act quick, the smell can stay for 2 years!!! it will come back again and again when the dog gets wet, yuck! I found this: *borrowed*
1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap

Mix together and use immediately. Use this mixture several times until the smell is nearly gone. Use over full body if desired after a couple of bathings on the sprayed area(s) only.

Warning:
A) Use this formula on areas that got sprayed, do not shampoo all over the animal. Skunk spray is an oil and will spread to the other parts of the body by scrubbing it into other areas.
B) Do not store in a closed lid container, toss out what you don't use because this mixture will exploded in a sealed bottle or container.
C) Hydrogen peroxide can dry out the skin, so be careful to how much you shampoo your pet with this formula, and as well it may make the fur lighter (bleached out) due to the hydrogen peroxide in the formula.

I don't remember what my grandpa used to do when our dog got sprayed but whatever it was, it worked quick :D
good luck :)

I went to the petstore, i called ahead of time to tell them what happened and to see if they had a product to remove the smell from the house and the dog, and they do. so i go in, the second i enter, the lady was like 'so your the skunk girl', i smelled so bad, its like i was sprayed! so embarassing. so hopefully this stuff works, i bought both skunk odour removers they had. she advised me to take work off today and tomorrow, my boss is going to kill me >.< thanks for the help guys! -weeps- i smell so bad :sick2: :cry3:

When anyone calls the emerg we give them the homemade remidy that Chicky gave - Also if he got nailed in the face - please make sure that he doesnt continue to bother with his eyes, as previously mentioned the skunk spray is an oil which sometimes the eyes have difficutly getting rid of (if they take a direct hit) and this can be very very irritating.

All the best!

Ewww. I can't imagine anything more unpleasant to have to deal with. Good luck, I hope you're able to get rid of the smell right quick and your doggie didn't get it in his eyes or nose.
I don't imagine your boss would want you in to work in that condition!

The worst part is that we all know what skunk smell like but when they spray the odour is so different and 100% worst it get into your mouth :gaah:

Hang in there Kat :? You will be one more paranoid person like me to watch out for those monsters when putting the dogs out.

That is so true, i didnt expect skunk to smell like that, its way different than i expected it to smell, almost like burning rubber. Id say most of the smell is gone, but its still there. i have to go to work today and i know im going to be so paranoid about smelling, but last night my mom and i went and bought febreeze and a whole bunch of air fresheners and cleaners, so hopefully the house will be ok soon lol. Thanks for the help guys, i appreciate it :D

It happened to my dog, I felt so bad I couldn't go near him. My mom took ketchup.... yep ketchup... didn't work a bit. So anyways after a day or two of making my dog feel like crap I went into the pet store to get that Odour Out stuff and it worked wonders. When he gets wet you can't even smell that he's been sprayed by a stunk. I highly recommend it.

Our dog got sprayed at teh beginning of teh summer, and we used to odour killing stuff, and it worked pretty well, but unfortunatly, she still smells slightly of skunk when she is wet. One of the main problems is that she doesn't shed. Yes, the skunk smell can stay a long time, but it lessens as the hair is shed etc, and since Kiana doesn't shed at all, it just stays and stays, though we do cut her hair.

My neighbors dog bit a skunk... RIGHT on the sacs where the yucky oil is held and she got it right in her mouth. Poor thing was throwing up and a bit foamy from her mouth making so much saliva to get rid of it. SHe was MISERABLE. THe vet told them to put chlorofyll in her water to help her tummy and the smell, and it worked great. Poor Lucy though, she didn't learn her lessona nd still chases them!

Wanna hear something worse? My aunt was walking along a path between her house and the road one night. She looks down- there's a dead skunk. *awww- that's terrible* she thinks. Suddenly 4 baby skunks pop out of the bushes and ALL spray her. The little guys emptied themselves on her. 4 of them.

My uncle could smell her before he saw her approach the house. *sigh* poor lady- she had to clean herself outside to prevent the rest of the house from vomiting at the smell. :laugh4:

I hope the more qualified animal control people collected and took care of the babies without a similar incident.

If you let him in the house then it will stay in the house for a good month or more as well. :panic: It seems that Downy Fabric Softener and mouth wash are the way to go. Add vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda... and IF you don't mind, shaving him down (or even just a puppy cut) will help a lot as that's where most of the scent latches on.
