I tried to introduce a rat to the rest of my rats & a fight broke out so i tried to separate the 2 & got bit in the back of my hand, feels like a vein got punctured. the bleeding stopped but every once in a while drops of blood still appear & the back of my hand is swollen & hurts very very much. Do i need to go get a tetanus shot or any chance i need a dr..? the pain won’t lessen & all the articles online about rat bites sound scary, i just wanted someone to re-assure me i don’t require a dr over this.
btw, the 2 boys have been separated & i applied antibiotic to the one who got bit.
thx for your time!

No one answered this? I know it's late but for bites I apply pressure, clean and bandage them then take ibuprofen to prevent swelling and help with pain. The swelling can delay the healing process and can cause pain on its own. How are you feeling now?

Btw I've been bitten many many times over the years with my rescues and never had to see a doctor.

Sirry for answering this so late. Obviously if you think there’s long term damage you should see a doctor. Like any wound it could be something more. If your worried about Rat diseases, I wouldn’t. I’ve been bitten many times by domesticated and wild rats. Clean the wound with soap and water. Some hydrogen peroxide applied if your really worried, some neosporin and a bandage.
* I work along side of wild rats.
