I have a male rat, 21 months old, named toffee and he was doing all good. But 4 days ago I noticed a little bloating of his belly, and next day the stomach was quite stiff, seems to be dried poop in the colon, he wasn't pooping like he did normally, his poop was very dry.

And from the last three days, he isn't sleeping!!😔😔 I guess he's in pain.. I mean, yeah he does sleep sometimes with a little eye open.. but what it seems to me, he isn't sleeping 😔 I gave him some meds today, A laxative and now his poop is watery. But still the stiffness isn't going much, the stiff colon seems to be just a little bit less in size than before. 😔 Please help!! What should I do. I'm concerned that he is not sleeping and ..it would be horrible if he continues not to. There's no vet in my area.

He's eating fine, I fed him quite a lot watermelons, he doesn't like to drink much water and maybe that's a cause for the problem.. so I fed him watermelons, bit of tomatoes, and boiled mashed potatoes.
I noticed something unusual like, in the evening, his poop has become really red, not like dark maroon red, but yeah, quite red and watery.. do you think it's because of watermelon??
Please please help.!!😔😔
I'm to blame, I haven't been a good caretaker. 😔😔😔

Ok at this point you are possibly looking at an abdominal mass. :( If he's having issues passing feces it may be pressing/impeding his digestive system or its inside it causing issues. The redness is most likely the water melon, or tomatoes.

Can you get him to a competent vet?

Yes, it is abdominal mass, he's having trouble passing it. And, no there's not a vet around my area, and because of the lockdown I can't travel for much far, he's in better condition now, he did sleep a bit last night. But the dried feces is still in there. It's lesser than before. But enough to get him in pain.

Do you understand what I mean by mass? I'm talking about a tumour.

You can buy/use infant liquid ibuprofen and see if that helps with his pain at all. I can give you a dose if you can get me an approximate weight of your rat.

sorry, but, I don't it's tumour, symptoms are quite like megacolon and i tried giving him an enema and he did flushed out some of it. Really quite hard. So, best guess is it's feces and not tumour. As, by touching i'm really sure that it's the colon, the whole colon which is filled. His weight is around 450 grams. And today, he has started sleeping, but can't sleep for long. Just for 15-20 minutes at once.

Abdominal tumour are soft to push right?? I mean.. what he has, is a bit tough and horizontally placed. So, i thought it's probably some part of the large intestine, which is swollen.. ☹️ sorry if I'm being annoying..

Internal tumours can be a range of things. From a bunch of little tumours to a large mass. Rarely they don't push or are stuck on something vital (internal organs). Most times internal masses are nasty and painful. Sometimes the tumour is in a vital organ. I lost one little old rescue to an enlarged spleen, which usually indicates cancer. She died on the table during exploratory surgery. Megacolon usually presents as late-stage a lot earlier than this. 4-11 months is when late-stage megacolon presents. At his age it's likely a cancer causing his problems. This won't resolve and will only become worse. If you get infant liquid ibuprofen, his dose will be 0.23 ml every 4-6 hours. If you can only find children's you should double the dose.
Watch for signs of pain like squinty eyes, rapid breathing, fur puffed up, grinding teeth, etc

Yes, rapid breathing is there, he does grind teeth sometimes, and yeah he is in pain. 😔 You're right.. so.. there's no chance right.. 😔 i don't know how to cope with it.

I am so very sorry that this is happening to Toffee. {{hugs}}
See if you can get infant liquid ibuprofen, or children's ibuprofen to help Toffee with pain.

You will likely also want to see if you can find a vet that will humanely put rats to sleep
Please see information on how this needs to be done in the Reference Thread, along with links on information on how to decide when

Here is some information on the signs of pain in rats Health Guide: Signs of Pain in Rats

Lilspaz68 (Shelagh) would know better then me, but I assume that if possible, feeding him soy infant formula (nonGMO) thickened with baby cereal (such as rice baby cereal), and also feeding Toffee baby food will give him nutrition and fluids
I am very sorry that you and Toffee are going through this

😔😔😔 Thanks.. I got ibuprofen, and giving him. No vet in my area, that means 😔😔😔 he would probably suffer more.. 😞😞 I'm feeling really useless and just..

If he starts to feel more comfortable and is able to sleep, start giving the ibu every 6-8 hours and see if it still works. You want the lowest effective dose as ibu is hard on the kidneys, for humans and rats. If he shows signs of pain again then bring the doses closer together. I'm so sorry :(

Hey, I got a problem I mean.. there wasn't any porphyrin before.. but today I gave him ibu and now, there's some porphyrin on his eyes. I'm worried. Should I continue to give him ibu? Please reply ASAP.

And he's breathing heavily, I didn't tried to get him to flush out.. gave him the ibu, and do you think he's in more pain.
Well, a side note, last year, he had an injury on his leg, which was disastrous, I lost all hopes, but he made it. At that time, I gave him ibu, because his leg had inflammation. Do you think that.. giving him ibu that time, actually lead to kidney or liver disfunction or probably a cancer 😞😞 and, giving it again is just making it worse?? Please i'm confused. And, i just don't wanna see him in pain.

SQ, no vet nearby is the problem here now. What can be done in place of vet as far as what it looks like will need to be done. I'm not for handling it at home, but....it would be preferable to a slow, painful demise.
