I'm thinking of getting my two girls spayed as well. I know there are many benefits to spaying them. Can anyone give me an approximate cost or is it completely dependent on the vet?

Cost varies according to the vet and where you live.

Many vets charge the same price as they charge for a dog or cat but you will need to ask.

Please read the previously posted link to the reference section about things to discuss with your vet (etc) prior to surgery with rats.

Thank you everyone. :grouphug: We are all grieving here still, she was like a member of the family. My mother reminded me that days after we brought her home all her siblings as well as her parents at the store died suddenly, so perhaps we were able to give her a little more time than she would have had if we had not gotten her. Still it hurts because she was so so young. I think she just never really recovered from the anesthesia for some reason.

Tomorrow we are going to search for a new cage mate for my surviving rat kiki. It will be hard but I want to start soon on quarantine so she will not have to wait too long for a friend.

Since you have a spayed female, you could consider finding a "boyfriend" for her. :) Neuters are much easier (in case you want to get him fixed) and even if you don't opt for the surgery, an intact male isn't as likely to develop life-threatening gender-related issues like females are. Then you can have the best of both worlds. So sorry to hear about your little one. :(

Thanks BlueSkyy, we are considering getting a boy. My only fear is that I heard boys are more aggressive than girls and I worry that they may fight because my surviving rat has a very dominant personality.

Try looking for a rescue in your area. Usually the rats at a rescue have already been quarantined and debugged and the caretaker will have an idea about their personality.
I believe that boy-girl intros are easier than same-sex. It's natural that a male and female would chose to be together. After all, that's where baby rats come from. :cheeky:

Of all my boys (partial list below) I've only ever had to have three neutered, and one of the three neuters was cancer-related, the other two were for aggression. So most boys are fat lumps. :p

That is good to know about the boys :3
I am looking into possible rescuing, the only issue is the nearest issue is 5hrs away in the neighboring state, so I am looking to see if maybe they would be willing to meet me half way or if they even adopt to people out of state.

Now my other girl has started sneezing a lot, I really hope she is not developing a respiratory infection. Her breathing is normal and the vet said her lungs sounded good, but she has had respiratory issues in the past. Also I think she misses her friend, she has been hiding under an igloo since the passing and that is very unusual for her. :(

I'm getting my rats desexed tomorrow, the vet is inexperienced with rats but has worked with rabbits. They're the only somewhat decent vets in my area. I haven't been able to sleep because of what the vet had told me over the phone; "you need to prepare for the idea that they may not make it, there's a lesser chance of them surviving the procedure because they're so small." I begged her to tell me the likely percentage of their survival. She said there's only a 30%-40% chance of them surviving it and it's terrifying. They told me I needed to fast them for 8 hours before the procedure, but I did some further research and found that they only need to fast for 2 hours.

Honestly, I would not go through the surgery with those odds.

I hope you did not go through with this surgery!!!
How are your girls??

When having rats spayed it is essential that it is done by a good vet with the knowledge and experience to do it safely. This vet does not know how and should not be operating on rats for any reason!

Rats do not fast before surgery
