Hey guys. I have two male rats, and one of the two boys always gets super sneezy when we come out for playtime. I usually set them up either on my bed or in my hallway (which closes off on all sides with doors). Neither of them sneeze at all in their cage, but as soon as we come out to play Pippin runs around and sneezes quite a bit. It gets a little less noticeable after the first ten minutes or so but I'm wondering if it's something to worry about since it does happen every time and my other rat Merry never sneezes.

Could it be something he's allergic or sensitive to in the area? Is there any way for me to tell/help soothe his sneezing?

It's probably excited sneezes.! Most of my rats do this whenever they come out too.!

are there any scents, or dust etc in the environment that might be irritating him when he is running around sniffing everything?
I can't be certain but I don't think so! I'm very particular so the areas are always very clean of dust. Could there somehow be residues of cleaning supplies irritating him? I use gentle liquids whenever possible because of my own sensitivities but I do use products to clean the floor, etc.

Usually I put something on the floor, a shower curtain for example, to make sure they can't get irritated by floor cleaners. It could be harsh chemicals from floor cleaners that could be causing sneezes.

Otherwise, it could be as benign as excited sneezes! New smells can sometimes trigger sneezes.

My 2 female rats do this too! I think it’s exited sneezing but I was wondering the same thing so I looked it up!
