To Lizzie, so sweet yet strong - I miss you fiercely.
You had just turned 6 weeks old when I picked you out from a large litter of manic babies at the Ottawa Humane Society. You were the calm and friendly one, scampering up to me with curiosity. You and sister Hillie came home with me on December 28, 2106 to start a new adventure together.
Humans doted on you Lizzie, charmed by your sweet demeanour and pretty eyes. But I soon discovered that you were one clever and determined cookie with a gift for maintaining justice in the rat kingdom. You were half the size of my bumptious boys, yet they never dared bully or steal treats from you. It's funny how one so small can demand such respect.
You lived on for more than a year after sister Hillie died on Christmas day 2018. Indeed, you were blessed with flawless health for so long Lizzie. But I watched you struggle through pain after waking up from tumour surgery at the late age of 2 years 10 months; you walked in laboured circles for hours and I feared you wouldn't pull through. Yet you were clearly determined to live, and went on to enjoy yet more months of quality life.
Near the end you were dogged by worsening respiratory disease, and you battled against the array of meds I tried to administer. So sorry Liz...but it seems you were smart enough to know that I meant well.
Rest well gentle Lizzie. Go on to charm others at the Rainbow Bridge with those big, soulful eyes.
