I'm so interested to hear from everyone on whether there is much difference, in general, between rats you've purchased from a store versus ones that are raised from a litter in your home.

My little ones have all come from stores that also sell them as feeders. I got my first rat from a friend who couldn't keep her. I didn't know anywhere else to get them.

I wouldn't know I adopt all my rats, I have recently just had a litter of my own but I adopted the mother "who I didn't know was pregnant" I have adopted rats even 1.5years old
Had one that was 1.5years with a tumor. I did not remove it and let her live her days happy usually the last day is the one they stop eating completely. So I just stay with them comfort them cry and they usually go within 24 hours.

Just so you are ware …. This is a rat rescue forum
We do not support buying rats from stores or buying rats from breeders or breeding rats
We support and promote adopting rats from rat rescues, shelters and rats being rehomed

I have found that all ratties are wonderful and rescue rats are as healthy as rats from other sources
Even abused rats that have not been socialized and had a horrible start in life can be loving wonderful little friends
For me the difference is that when rats have not be socialised or are fearful, you need to slowly earn their trust

thanks for the public service announcement SQ. just so you are aware... I don't support it either. but i know of no alternative; hence, my question.
