I've had one hell of a sad ride through the past few months. Ready for it to be over already.

Lost my three eldest rats within a span of the few months. First Grumpy in October, Lil Chu in late November, and now my Ni Ni :( More than a little heartbroken as these three were the second set of rats I brought home and they were the first group that I learned how to introduce rats to each other (at that time, Gideon, Amun, and Maddox were about a year old). They were all coming up on their 2.5 year old birthdays, so it wasn't necessarily unexpected.

I still remember bringing them home.

Here's some photos. I remember bringing them home and struggling to tell Lil Chu and Ni Ni apart and now I can look at those pictures and just instantly know. The pictures are them with one of my original rats and my profile picture-- Gideon.

I miss all of my boys. Never gonna get easier saying goodbye.

FYI, all of my remaining rats are healthy. I've rat phoned them all, and they all sound fine. Food is great, poops look great, the urine I can see looks great. I think my last move in October shortened the lifespan of my eldest rats, as Grumpy passed away literally two days after coming home from boarding, and Lil Chu and Ni were quick to follow.

I honestly don't know why they all passed away suddenly other than the stress of moving must've affected them long term and they were unable to recover. Other than typical old rat problems (weight loss, overgrown teeth and nails) nothing was out of the ordinary for my boys. However, I will still monitor my surviving rats.

loving rats is so overwhelming wonderful and heartbreaking at the same time. the great thing about the rat forum is that we understand. it's so easy to take the normal everyday for granted... until those days run out....

So so sorry for your loss! I know, and they know you loved those little guys! It's always tough to lose a pet. Especially around the holidays. I had to put my second dog down the day before Thanksgiving, and am about to put our bunny down probably today (it's just tough for me to let go and say when). I think I have another rat nearing the end, and my old girl, Macaroni, is hanging in there. She's about 2.5 years old, but still acts like a young rat. Just a little slower, and showing signs of aging. We never want to let go, but they always seem to know what's best. For them, and us. Hope your other guys hang in there and the grieving doesn't take a toll on them.
