So I have two rats I need help with.
One of them, I just got October 3rd, is about 7 months old. She has been sneezing since the day I got her. Other than the sneezes, Marlene is perfectly fine.
My 2nd rat, Janny, has been taking "Doxycycline" 0.03 mls at 100mg/ml, and "Enrofloxacin" 0.22 mls at 22.7mg/ml. twice a day since 11/06/19. She got so much better, she's not lethargic anymore and shes acting and playing like a normal rat, but she's still making bad breathing noises. She doesn't appear to be breathing hard, maybe it's just taking a long time to clear up.

Anyone have any ideas? I don't know what's wrong with Marlene, and I was wondering if childrens benadryl would help Janny.

Hello!

I had a rat named Cornflower who sneezed a lot, like your Marlene, but it wasn't until she was two years old that she started getting an infection. I wouldn't worry too much, but definitely pay attention in case Marlene starts making clicking or "grunting" sounds.

I don't know if children's Benadryl will help with breathing issues in rats, but I'd consult a vet about it if possible.

Thank you! I'm trying to save myself from another $80 vet visit, that's why I ask here

Marlene too? :( I'm thinking mycoplasma flare for Marlene if her sneezing is wet and constant. Have you noticed excessive porphyrin (the red stuff) production with Marlene? Ms. Janny might be dealing with pneumonia.. sigh. I'd say start Marlene on baytril and doxy to see if that squashes the sneezes but Janny will benefit from a consult with her vet. Are you able to call the vet and speak to a veterinary technician? They may be able to give you guidance and possibly talk to the doctor to prescribe you a different antibiotic treatment combo or diagnostic med (eg Lasix) without having to bring both girls in for a visit.

Keep us updated and keep an eye out for replies from the A Team of rattie gurus on here. :)❤ They always have on point guidance.
