A few hours ago, one of my lovely male rats Marco was on my couch under a little pillow tipi looking like he was about the sleep, or at least chill. I layed down on the other side of the couch, and play some classical music on my phone while playing a game. Anyways, I periodically checked on him, and I can't quite remember what worried me, but I took away the pillows, and then it really went bad.

He started shaking and he lifted his lil' hands near his face and opened his mouth. He looked like he was in pain, and closed his eyes and kept shaking. He then stopped, and kinda just laid there looking tired/ill. I called my little brother over, because I wanted to make sure I had backup. He was laying kinda odd, just flopped there, not propping himself up with his legs like normal. So, I poked him to see if he was just being lazy or was tired, and he didn't really respond, just moved with my touch. This concerned me even more, and I had my little brother(who Marco is generally curious about and always moves and goes to him when around) pet and gently poke him, and nothing happened. At this point, I was really worried and kinda just pushed him a little, and he completely flopped over, as if he couldn't move at all. I tried several more times to stimulate him, putting him on the ground(he likes running on the carpet), talking to him, and nothing. Then out of nowhere he started moving and ran around all scared? I am totally confused, but he went back into his cage(it's right next to the couch and the door lines up perfectly with the armrest, so they can run out) and laid down.

He seems fine now, he accepted treats, cuddled with his brother, and is now sleeping with his bro. I'm just so confused as to what happened, and very scared for my lil' pal. When this happened though, I do note that the violin in the music got a little higher pitched, but nothing too crazy, and the phone wasn't close to him. Was this a reaction to that, did he get scared, or is this signs of an illness? I'm really worried it will happen again in the future, or that it's a sign of something serious that needs to be dealt with fast. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance. :c

Sounds like it could have been a seizure. If you can please get him to a vet with the knowledge and experience to handle rats and get him proper medication- it could be something going on internally. I don't personally know what medication to use but I know some people on here have dealt with this kind of thing before.!

If it was a seizure you will want to start a seizure log.
You will also want to message lilspaz68 if she does not respond to this post as she is the medical contributor and has a lot of experience with seizures in rats

I will. I read the first article, and Marco displayed a LOT of those symptoms. He seems okay now, running around, hiding in tipi's, but I'm still worried. Thanks for letting me know.

How is Marco doing? I agree that his behavior sounds like he had a seizure or he may have had some transient vertigo from a condition called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo; sometimes the tiny crystals in the ear become displaced and get stirred up due to head movements like turning or tilting the head, which can cause seizure-like symptoms.

I'll echo SQ in saying to keep a seizure journal and continue to monitor him. With rats that I have had where seizures occured, I was given Midazolam 5mg/ml (.05ml in the nostril or subQ). Midazolam is an anti seizure drug but is considered a sedative like valium or phenobarbital. Midazolam isn't a preventive seizure medication though. Gabapentin or Levetiracetam are standard anti seizure drugs.

If you're dealing with BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), it is transient and hopefully it doesn't ever happen again. It's scary to witness seizure like behavior when a BPPV episode occurs. I've seen rats during episodic seizure and BPPV, and the symptoms can appear very similar.

Seizure log for sure, recording any seizures, how long, severity, how long it took to recover from, any possible triggers (like bright lights, sounds). Hopefully it's just a one-off and it never happens again. If he does have one again and you are there you can hold and talk to him but be VERY careful near his mouth as they can bite down without knowing it and hurt you. Holding, talking to then can bring them out of the seizure faster. If it continues you will want to see a vet and show them the log and any video you have of the seizures and they will hopefully prescribe you phenobarbitol, an anti-seizure medication.
