Hello! I'm from a small-ish town in Alaska.
I grew up with rats and loved them so much.
My husband and I are getting ready to adopt a couple of little girl rats if all goes well.
I wanted to join before I bring them home to help continue my research and also be able to ask questions so I am able to have everything ready to the best of my ability before I bring them home!

Albinos are legal in certain areas of alaska. I'm in a small town that they are. The law is not really one that is enforced though as long as you don't go around advertising special rats. I've known people in the city who own rats even though it isn't legal inside the city limits.

That's interesting yet seems so strange.

It's a ridiculous law honestly. Especially since from what I understand the reason they allow albinos is because they can't breed. But again it is rarely enforced as long as you don't go around flaunting it.

Well as far as I understand albinos can breed, but they say the reason for the law only allowing albino rats is so they can't breed. It's uneducated nonsense. Plus any rats that got loose would have a low percentage chance to survive the winter. Sad but true.

It sure does seem illogical.

You'd be surprised how uneducated most governments and even housing units are with animals. I know we won't get into this debate here, but a lot of pit bull type dog breeds are banned in some US states, and most apartment complexes, HOA won't allow reptiles or snakes (for whatever reason, HOA thinks snakes aren't reptiles, but amphibians are), and a multitude of other things.

Once you really look into it, there are a lot of dumb rules and laws set against animals due to negligence to research.

So true. That's why people have "special" rats and breed them responsibly. You just can't advertise and it's better not to take them out of your house on a leash because you never know if there will be some asshole who knows the law and decides to report.

Wow, I wonder if some stupid people would argue the red/ruby/whatever-eyed rats were albino or siamese rats were albino... Can't imagine living in a place where my animals weren't allowed. I don't shut up about my pets, so I'd get found out pretty quickly lol!

Haha me either! I have tons of pics on my phone, and am constantly showing them off, and have to talk about my animals, mostly the rats, at least 20 times a day. My kids joke that I talk about the rats more than I do them! They even had my first 3 rats make me "raintings" (rat paintings) for mothers day a couple of years ago! Haha!

My friends get sick of my "Look at this picture of Grumpy! Look how cute he is! He's just a little fuzzball."

And your kids are very smart... Fastest way to get to Mom's heart is through her animals :D
